Was Bradley Cooper in AS better than Ralph Fiennes in Grand Budapest?

I finally got around to watching Grand Budapest Hotel this weekend. Ralph Fiennes was really really good in it.

I'm surprised he was left off the best actor list for the Oscars.

Was Bradley Cooper that much better?

No not at all, GBH is a much better movie than American Sniper, and American Sniper is just getting nominations because of the influx of fake patriotism it has brought to movie watchers and the academy

Grand Budapest is seamless and is perfectly paced. It's like one, long, great song.

Sniper is great, but it has its flaws.

Ive seen both and thought Grand Budapest was a great movie and Fiennes was awesome, but I think its harder to portray a real person. And I think BC did a great job in AS. Its close, but i give the nod to Cooper but thats only based on my idea that its harder to play a real person.

This is my issue. He was spectacular, but it seemed almost impossibly natural. Is that a testament to his acting, or was it just the perfect casting?

It's not like Fiennes just walked through the role in his normal manner of speaking and acting. "Impossibly natural" doesn't just happen. That was an amazing performance. A performance where he didn't have the benefit of adding a thick accent or altering his physique to set his character apart from his normal appearance.

Eddie Redmayne is winning all of the awards (in part) because his role is super-obviously apart from his normal appearance/behavior. There's a built-in benefit to those roles where you're severely crippled or alter your physique and manner of speaking. It's why some actors go for those roles that have them looking deformed or extremely less attractive. It's why Jennifer Aniston assumed she'd get an Oscar nom for playing a scarred, crippled, drug addict.

This. The Academy just has no clue how to deal with the subtle genius of Fiennes in GBH. The fact that Fiennes was able to imbue that over the top role with so much sincerity was completely lost of the literal-minded Academy.
They go for the "hot hand" because they need the big names walking the Red Carpet. Fiennes and Gyllenhaal should have been there, but to be honest, there were MANY incredible acting performances. Cooper's was also one of them. I would have dumped Cumberbatch, not because he was bad, but because that role was average when compared to what others were doing this year.

Wes literally wrote the role with Ralph in mind as the character. I saw an interview, I think it was on the Today show, with them, and Wes was talking about how he told Ralph he better not frick up

Can't get past Cooper's really bad accent.

And that plastic baby, come on.

the REALLY OBVIOUS fake baby certainly took me out of that scene with a snort. I do love that BC kept trying to make it move by pushing it with his fingers.

Have you ever heard Chris Kyle speak? Cooper was mostly spot on

I don't get the accent hate... As a country boy myself, I thought the accent was believable... Perhaps over the top on a couple of instances.

I'm still not over the fact that Ralph Fiennes didn't win the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for Schindler's List.

To me, that ranks up there with Shakespeare In Love winning Best Picture over Saving Private Ryan.

I'm a stickler when it comes to southern accents in movies and TV shows, but Cooper's really wasn't that bad.

Nicholas Cage in Con Air was the GOAT horrible accent.
