LSU currently sits #38 in the nation in defensive efficiency (out of 351 teams)

LINK

Last year, we finished #81 in the nation in defensive efficiency

LINK

Our opponents effective FG % is 44.2% this year vs. 46.7% last year; where we have improved the most is perimeter defense, giving up 31.3% 3 pt FG this year vs. 35.8% 3 pt FG last year....that is a massive improvement. Something we can directly thanks to Hickey/Stringer being replaced by Gray/Hornsby, with Quarterman also seeing an increased role.

We have gotten stayed about the same in 2 point FG defense; giving up 43.8% last year to 43.1% this year. So clearly the guards are making the big difference on the outside.

Hornsby and Quartermann also work their arse off to fight screens and make sure every single shot is defended. Only then does the height matter.

What we are bad at is allowing way too many offensive rebounds, we are among the worst in the country (almost 12 given up a game). Mickey blocks a lot of shots but it doesnt help a ton when he throws it out of bounds or they get it right back in another way and still score.

It's much better when Quartermann is in the game. Guards have a harder time penetrating and dishing/shooting when Quartermann is guarding them.

I definitely think it could be better. There has been some minimal improvement by our bigs on ball screens but not as much IMHO as they are capable of.

And our rotations and awareness are still slower than they can be.

But there have been times like the second half against WVU and the Ole Miss game where it looks like we know what we are doing. Just like to see it more consistently.

The defense still does have room to improve. Like I thought it was shaky last night. The offense rebounding is also a problem and it's odd because we are top 20 in rebounds. But I do think our guards play great defense and Mickey and Martin come and go on D.

I agree that bigger guards are a huge positive. This was a glaring defect last year that every team we played looked to exploit even though I liked their heart! However one issue negating the guard this year defensively is the fact that we turn the ball right back over after a takeaway. So the numbers may not reflect a drastic improvement but the perimeter defense is absolutely better. Also, the taller guards are better for entry pass to bigs on low block given added dimension to this year's offensive sets that were extremely difficult to execute at times last year.

Their effort and better recognition of good shooters is way more important than height. Plus with Patterson and Gray we are really only taller at one of the guard spots.

I know most of the times Hickey is listed as 5-11 but ive been around him and 5-11 seems like a stretch
