A Sad Report on Purloo

Four of us went to dinner last night at Purloo (for those of you don't know, it's and adjunct to the Southern Food and Beverage Museum on OCH).
We really wanted to like it. But we were all disappointed.
The space is nicely done, with very high ceilings and a bit of an industrial look. The bar and kitchen are open as you might expect.
The staff was casually dressed and friendly. They tried to be accommodating. Alas, they don't have their act quite together. The drinks were agonizingly slow coming from the bar, and if you watched carefully, you could see some confusion.
Fortunately, the appetizers and entrees arrived within a reasonable amount of time. Unfortunately, though, they brought the wrong entree for me. They straightened it out in less than five minutes I guess.
More problematic was the food itself. Two of us had the lamb stew. It was bone-in with precious little meat, and the stew was sort of sparse and not exciting. Another person had the paneed rabbit. It wasn't really bad, but it could have been anything . . . chicken, veal, etc., and the accompaniment was meh. My wife had the pan seared drum. Again it was very average.
We each had a salad/appetizer and entree. We each had one drink. And three of us had one glass of wine each. The bill was about $220 before tip. Not a bargain under the circumstances.
I really hope the place improves. I like what's happening on Oretha Castle Hailey, and I like the idea of this restaurant and the museum.

Damn, that sucks to hear. The setup looks great and I could see sitting at that bar if they had a craft cocktail scene like Cure.
Hopefully they can right the ship.

Not a surprise to me.
I used to attend the Purloo pop-ups before they finished the restaurant and was never impressed with the food.
He could excite me with his menu, but he would disappoint with the execution.
I do hope something makes it in that area as it would be good for further development.
VOR- was it crowded?

By 8pm there was a pretty decent crowd in there. a couple of large tables and several smaller ones.

That's a shame. Personally, by looking at the menu, I think they're trying just a little too hard.

Obrah, post a little something if you do. It came up to go here earlier in the week, but kind of balked when thinking about you an VOR's experiences.

Brett Anderson gave a review of Purloo if anyone is interested. Anyone else been lately?
nola
3 beans.
I don't agree with the majority of his review as I found the food underwelming.
I've always found the same issue with Ryan Hughes' food.
Anderson captures it well.

Hughes' otherwise admirable restraint occasionally gets him into trouble. The tamales carried a frustratingly scant amount of the delicious crawfish gravy, and an otherwise solid specimen of fried soft-shell crab felt unfinished propped naked on a mound of jambalaya. An attempt to turn a lowcountry seafood boil into a knife-and-fork dish worthy of the dry Wagram Riesling from Austria was marred by dried-out crab claws and too few clams.
