Wouldn't it be better if the refs were in charge of supplying and handling of balls for nfl games. Why would you let teams bring their own balls so they could be tampered.

Also, I read on deadspin that Indy was suspicious in the nov 16 matchup that NE deflated the ball.

After the D'Qwell Jackson int in the 2nd qtr, equipment manager told pagano who told GM grigson who told nfl field director who alerted the refs. At the half, longtime ref Gerry Austin checked the balls. Colts balls legal, Pats balls were not.

So the NFL knew about this and did nothing? Ray Rice anyone?

They should let the Falcons play the Seahawks in the super bowl, imo.

They have no evidence of ever receiving this complaint and will conduct a full-scale investigation to prove it.

No because the QB's would be throwing horrible footballs and not all QB's want the ball the same.

When I was at SMS we took 50 balls with us to each game and the night before or day of game, depending if night or day game, the QB would pick his 6 or 12 balls he wanted. Then he would also pick the 3 we used for QB Warmup and QB Sidelines.

Now we would send them in at 13.5 lbs and have a ball boy deflate them to 12 or 11.5 as game went on if our QB asked, depending on conditions, air pressure, humidity.

We also used White Tacky towels under the half towels for our QB for better grip (also illegal).

The best things we did was Silicon Spray the Yokes of the DL as that was odorless and tasteless but OL cound not get off hand and very slippery and we wore 5/8" cleats instead of 1/2" as you could not tell difference just looking at them. We would magic marker these cleats black until they allowed metal tips.

They probably reairred the footballs. Most NCAA refs will purposefully reair them to 14 or higher to prove a point.

ETA:

Another trick we would do, is go to stadium night before to set up. I would send a student Manager into the facility to "visit" with other student MGR etc, while he was there his job was to look for scouting reports and any handouts he could find, such as tests etc. We would take to hotel and give to usually the OL Coach.

As always you were to spit on the midfield logo after walkthrough on the road.

I learned my tricks from Jeff Boss, LSU; Shorty Kleinau, KState; some NFL guys like Mike Davidson, Chiefs; and many others.

Shorty called me the Pirate, because I stole tricks from everyone.

The absolute worst thing we did to footballs was to put them in a dryer as soon as we unboxed them. It scuffed the balls and raised the natural tackiness of them, as heat expanded the pores.

I did not like it as it hurt our dryers and caused some stuff to get pin holes in them. But I know a few EQ guys that do this. Or they use a horse brush.

The best way to break in a new football is to have the QB at kids camp throw them, as they do not know what they are doing and think they are special throwing new footballs.

I know some will use staples and scruff them then air them to 18 for 48 to 96 hours to help loosen up.

That's funny. Way back in the day we had a road game at Northern Colorado and during walk thrus the day before we made a huddle at mid field to disguise guys taking turns pissing on the UNC Bears logo.

This whole deflate-gate is so stupid. If people actually knew about all the "gamesmanship" that took place at the college level, much less the NFL where the stakes are even higher, they would be shocked. This is such a non-story.

The best was when we broke into SIU's locker room at old McAndrew. We took a call sheet and a signal sheet.

They never knew we were in there either.

Trainers get credit for things, but it is usually the Equipment guys and the football secretaries that determine how good a football team is run and organized.

The equipment guys spend more time with the players than anyone.

The NFL secretly prefers a saggy set of balls to a firm full set

I believe something similar as well.

There should be a standard NFL ball and it should be for both teams, consistently monitored. Teams should practice with the same standard ball if they want to be familiar with it..
