Horrible analogy. With a prevent D

No it's not, both are an overly conservative approach to finish a game completely shying away from your typical set. Both are designed to burn clock and limit the ability of the other team to put up points quickly.

quote:

WE HOLD possession of the ball, take only solid shots and work the clock.

He was stating that taking shots too late in the clock can lead to bad shots that allow the other team to get back into the game.

quote:

Down the stretch, if we want to be a threat, we must play smarter with a late lead.

This is the key to finishing with a lead entirely.

I know the frustration, but - sure as we're both sitting here - the time we do "kill the clock" will result in a run for the other team that crushes our momentum. Then, just as many folks will get on here and whine about how we didn't keep the intensity going for the whole game and that's why we lost.

They did it in the last two minutes last night...but the tactic should have been employed at 4 or 5 minutes out.

Terrible analogy.

We have possession in basketball when we want to drain the clock. Its the equivalent of us having an 8 minute drive with the lead at the end of a game -or- throwing 3 incomplete passes and draining 30 seconds.

ETA:

Even if both end with no points, its better to have spent 8 minutes. A good basketball team has effective set plays in their offense. They pass the ball around the entire court, tiring the other team, and eventually getting an open look after spending 25 seconds to do so.

If we can't effectively score in a set offense, we have much bigger issues.

Definitely need to be smarter at the end of games.... the clock is your friend with a lead inside four minutes.

I'm very happy we won and won dominantly.

We have the talent to make a tournament run, but you need to be able to adapt to what the game gives you. We need to be able to slow it down and run effective set plays.

Can't we be excited about the team and still talk about where we can improve? No team is perfect.

Absolutely. Certainly no problem doing that on my end. Still think we drastically improved on all the issues of last game... Too many 2nd half three's last game (13 in second half. Took 13 all game).

We ran clock effectively the last 2 minutes of the game. We had two shots that barely beat the buzzer. We had another possession where we ran the clock and got an offensive rebound.

Jones called appropriate timeouts when Florida was making runs as well.

Not really equivalent. Trying to drain 35 seconds out of 4 minutes is not close to an 8 minute drive. Then you factor in how quickly an opponent can score, especially a good 3 point shooting team like Florida and momentum can shift drastically. You take yourself completely out of yoir offensive rhythm with way too much time left.

But we did score effectively because we didn't pass up open looks. Points and offensive rhythm are much more valuable than 35 seconds at that point in the game.

I think we did a pretty good job of doing that last night. If you thoight we should've been doing with 5 min left you're way wrong. Against the press you must attack and if no layup back it out. Its hard to walk it up against pressure when the long pass is there.
