Sod laid at new house last week - when/what to do for weed&feed type stuff?

Moving in to a new house on the 13th. Sod was laid late last week. They're watering it, so I'm not worried about that, but trying to figure out what to do as far as weed & feed or fertilizer. Any suggestions on what product to use, and when to apply it so that my grass looks kickass in a few months?

(I'm pretty sure it's St. Aug - that's what usually gets laid as sod, right?)

Could be centipede

That comes in sod too

I would fertilize and not use weed and feed

It should be pretty weed free for this first year anyway

I don't think you want to fertilize anything until it is green and growing well.

I wouldn't do anything until its had a chance to get a good root system going. should have hardly any weeds.

I had several large trees removed from my yard last summer. Landscaper used 12 pallets of centipede sod to fix the stump holes and damaged areas from tree work. He said not to apply any chemical until next summer.

In that case run the frickers off because they are wasting your water. Grass is either already dormant(brown) or will be in the next few days and is not going to root till it warms up a bit. The beauty of winter sodding is that watering is really not needed.

There is no need for the weed and feed for some time as sod should be pretty much weed free when laid down. Sometime around May hit it with some Turfbuilder or equivalent and just watch it grow.

On a side not the very best thing for you to use at this point and again in the spring is a fungicide.

+1

find out if it is centipede or st aug

if centipede be careful when you do fertilize and use variety specific fertilizer sparingly, lots of centipede lawns have been ruined by over or wrong kind of fertilizer

Rule of thumb is wait 6-8 weeks after sodding before any weed and feed

It could be St Aug, Centipede, or Bermuda. I wouldnt do any weed&feed until it's established a root system. Just water the crap out of it when it warms up.

I wouldnt think it would need much water right now, but i'm sure there are better yard guys than me on this board.

Weed and Feed.....two separate ordeals that should be done at separate times.

+1 in the fungicide. T-methyl works well.

I would use a bunch of Milorganite. It wont hurt the grass at all and keeps mine green all summer long.

Nothing you can do right now. Once growing season starts hit it with a granular fertilizer, and then 3 weeks later hit again with a granular pre emergence/fertilizer.

Don't fert or pre-emerge till it greens up in the spring.

Water as needed. There is a tendency for people to assume it is wet enough in the winter, just look under sod occasionally to make sure it is moist. Water accordingly.

just FYI... assuming you have St. Aug or Centipede, when it comes time to put out weed & feed, you'll need to determine which you have. St. Aug has a wider blade and rounded tips vs Centipede which has a thinner blade with a more pointed tip.

** picture is pretty big so didn't want to post it, here is a link
