On Her Majesty's Secret Service - Best Bond Film? What Does the M/TV Board Think?

I can't believe I just now saw this for the first time, this evening.
Definitely one of the darker Bond films. This has got to be one of the best Bond films, save maybe From Russia With Love and Casino Royale. Definitely better than anything Roger Moore ever did.
Also I was surprised/pleased to see the violence, although it was still realistic. And the lack of ridiculous gadgets made it all the more enjoyable.
Too bad Lazenby never reprised his role, I never cared for the Moore years. Seems they went further and further from what OHMSS stood on.

I liked Moore simply because he was the Bond when I was growing up.
I think most people who have actually seen the Lanzenby Bond, enjoyed it.
Damn dark arse film.

Good script. He wasn't that good of an actor. Was very bland.

Aside from Casino Royale, this is as close to the literary Bond that we ever got. Lazenby's performance has been classified as wooden, but I really believe this is a combination of him being raw and the producers taking the franchise in a direction to diferetiate him from Connery.
The movie is definitely on of my favorites, and I agree that the series' became to campy with Moore in the lead (a big reason why Dalton gets panned so much). But OHMSS had all of the elements a Bond film should and executed them to a T.
The only flaw for my dollar is that as a part of the continuity, how in the hell does Bond imagine Blofeld is not going to recognize him, based on previous encounters?

It is definitely one of the best Bond Movie. I agree that it incorporates all of the elements I want to see in a Bond movie. Somehow, Lazenby doesn't put on a great acting job but still manages to produce a very compelling Bond. Its also amazing how Blofeld's "plot" to destroy the world is secondary in the movie. I've always wondered what it would've been like with Connery.
The logo of the new movie Spectre has prompted a few people to speculate that it is related to OHMSS.

It really is an underappreciated film in the series. I'd certainly consider it top 5. My biggest problem comes from the feel that it has... It almost seems like two totally different moves; first the budding love of Bond and Tracy and then the actual 007 vs Blofeld in the allergy clinic.
Still, the dark nature of the film really brings a lot to the series. The actual falling in love process and Bond's ability to actually care for a woman is something that helps you understand Bond in the rest of the series.

It's a good one - of course it's also one of the top 2 or 3 Bond books as well. (some of the books are poor, like Casino Royale and Man with GG).

I love the James Bond films so I bought the whole collection of books and couldn't get through Casino Royale. Is there one I should start with in order to enjoy them. I just felt like Casino Royale was too slow.

1. From Russia With Love
2. OHMSS
OHMSS is pretty brilliant. I didn't have a huge problem with Lazenby. Yea he was a little stiff, but I thought he acquitted himself admirably enough in the romantic aspects. To be honest, I cannot see Connery's Bond convincing us that he's in love with Tracy or wanting to marry her.

I don't either, but if Connery had pulled it off, it would've been epic.

I think the implied idea was supposed to be that Bond had plastic surgery to change his appearance.
That was thrown off when Connery came back and also partially because, in the novels, OHMSS was followed by You Only Live Twice and the movies reversed the order.
The movie and book for OHMSS tracked very closely (probably the closest of any of them) and in the book they were actually meeting face to face for the first time.
As for the OP, yes the movie was very good but Lazenby alternated between being very awesome and outright cringe worthy.

OHMSS was actually supposed to follow-up Thunderball, but they couldn't get the Piz Gloria site (it wasn't finished yet), so they decided to do You Only Live Twice instead.

On Her Majesty's Secret Service was very good.
Goldfinger and Thunderball are top notch.
Moonraker's a good book too. Diamonds are Forever is strong.
Casino Royale, Man GG, and Live and Let Die are weak as I recall.
Thunderball's a good place to start because it introduces SPECTRE.
