Anyone here running pfsense at home? I have a spare pc at home and just ordered a 2nd nic for it. I'm looking to replace the functionality of my tplink router (running dd-wrt) with it. I feel like my router has been fairly unstable and plan on reverting it to the stock firmware and just using it as an access point and switch. Anyway, just curious if anyone else has a similar setup at home.

I did read about pfsense a couple of days ago when researching the idea of building my own NAS/router combo box with an Alix board. But ultimately it turned out to be more trouble (and money) than it's worth. I just have basic router requirements.

Years ago I replaced my router with an Untangle box. I was unhappy so I changed to pfsense. Although an improvement, my biggest complaint is the power draw and the needed environment.
I upgraded by building a mini box for pfsense and still the power requirements where 10-20x that of a small router. For an appliance running 24/7 forever, you need to keep that in mind.
Also, you most likely have to keep it in a climate controlled area so the garage is probably out of the question.
I ended up picking up a buffalo with dd-wrt and have been happy since.
Fwiw, we use pfsense at the office still.

Thanks for the info. I'm really doing it just to play around with it. I'm not worried about the power draw because it's a machine that I already have running 24/7 with other little "projects" of mine.
What I really want is something to monitor and report on bandwidth. I can't do it easily with DD-WRT from what I can tell (on my router... atheros based... at least).
