Depends, but it is more to put a tankless in an attic bc they take a special exhaust. I would estimate about 1500-2000

depends on the amount of temperature rise you set it at.... but, yes... might be tougher to get there in the winter, of course, but yeah...
for me, it's about reducing my family's carbon footprint.... unfortunately, my daughter will have to live in this world, as we leave it, and if i can make it just a little bit better for her, great.... i just wanna do my part...

Spoke to a builder and he said his concern with putting a unit outside is that during extreme cold (house will be in Covington) there could be issues with the unit freezing causing damage. Apparently he saw this happen last year with that really called January weather we had. Anyone have thoughts?
I like the idea of putting water heaters outside as it will be 2 less holes punched in the roof.

My inlaws have constant problems with theirs installed outside. I believe the humidity around here affects the electronics. I have had one in the attic vented through the exterior wall for 8 years without a problem.

I have a rinnai. I like it. Buy one if you want endless hot water, not because it will save you money. It does not save money. It costs more for the unit and installation.
If you have a larger house you will likely need two units. I would place one near the master bath and one near the kitchen.

It absolutely saves you money in the long run by not keeping a tank full of water hot when not needed even with higher upfront costs. It's not a complicated install, I put mine in myself.

Unless youre paying cash for your house, you have to factor in the price difference with the interest rate on your mortgage, for the life of the loan.
15 years is the average time someone lives in a home. So unless you can see significant savings in that time, its a wash.
The average cost to run the water tank vs tankless is $15 a month (x12), or $180. Over 15 years that = $2700. Factoring in the difference in price, along with your interest rate over the life of the loan, there is almost no difference.

You probably should decide first if you are going to use foam.
If you do, that will rule out (generally) putting a combustible unit in the attic.
If you don't, you can use whatever.

They make exterior units with an electric heating element that turns when the temp. drops below freezing. However the pipes going to and from the unit would need to be insulated.

unlimited hot water is nice - took for.ev.er. for the water to actually heat up at my old place. we just moved and we have a tank hot water heater. not to say i wouldn't go back to tankless (because we have run out of water a couple of times 
) but i'd probably go for the combo unit.

how do you set this up and what does it do for you?
if you put the unit in your attic, don't make a straight run out the roof. water will blow in the roof vent, and if the wh is directly below the vent, water will tend to accumulate in the very sensitive electronics. ask me how i know.
the stainless vent pipe was almost as expensive as the water heater. the vent is now offset with a drip leg directly below the vent cap.

I haven't fully decided but I'm probably not doing foam. What size tanks did you with? I have a 40 right now and it isn't cutting it.
