Toronto FC will announce Sebastian Giovinco as its newest player early next week, Sportsnet has learned.
TFC had been pursuing Giovinco, who is out of contract with Juventus at the end of the current Serie A season, for some time and recently tabled a contract offer to the Italian midfielder. Sources told Sportsnet that Giovinco has accepted TFC’s terms for a four-year deal after his representatives met with officials from the MLS club in Toronto this week, and that a formal announcement will be made either on Monday or Tuesday.
The same sources told Sportsnet that Giovinco had other contract offers from European clubs, but he decided to sign with Toronto FC after the team offered him “a truckload of money,” believed to be $7 million US per season. Giovinco is expected to finish out the current Serie A season with Juventus and officially join Toronto FC in July, but that could change.
Toronto FC declined to comment when contacted by Sportsnet. A source close to Michael Bradley said the TFC midfielder “is very happy” about the signing of Giovinco.
The Italian is coming in as a designated player, which brings Toronto’s number of DPs to four—Michael Bradley, Jozy Altidore and Gilberto. Unless the new collective bargaining agreement, currently being negotiated between Major League Soccer and the players’ union, increases the DP limit to four per team, Toronto will likely have to sell one of them—in this case, most likely Gilberto. Another option is to use allocation money to pay down Gilberto’s contract to a non-DP level. Whatever TFC decides to do, it must be roster compliant by the start of the 2015 MLS season.

So TFC/MLS learned nothing from the Cosmos?

He is making Thomas Muller money

I really don't like what they're paying him, but I think the move is still positive in terms of him moving to MLS just before turning 28. He's got 3-4 good years left. We need more players his age (or younger) to move and kill the "Retirement League" mentality.

In terms of the quality of player its great. But the wages are absurd. He now makes more than Pogba. It doesn't kill the over pay market value for players image though. I hope this doesn't end up like Defoe and he gets bored after a season with the level of play and says f this.

Yeah, I agree the money is absurd. I don't want people coming in demanding to be payed 150k a week, but I'm hoping that a few moves like this will inspire more decent players to come across the pond.

Money is just ridiculous. Half this much would still be too much.

The amount they are paying him is just retarded. That said, it's what you have to pay to convince a top player like formica atomica to jump ship from a European league in his prime.

But he isn't even a top player
He is a fringe player at Juve who was good on loan for Parma . He had some mid table Italy teams and some EPL teams interested but no one is going to pay those wages.
That said he should terrorize MLS back lines. We will really see how much the league has progressed. Defoe doing as he pleases and BWP lighting the league up doesn't help the image.

I don't give a shite about image. If he improves the level of play of our domestic league, so be it.

Yeah I agree, I'm glad they are trying to bring better people but 7 million is stupid money.

Can someone help quantify to me just how Toronto can afford to throw all this money around? Are their sponsorships that good? Does ownership not care about losing money? I could see Seattle affording it with their great sponsors, no less than 40k at each game, ownership, etc. But Toronto??

Theyre also looking at a stadium expansion I believe.

Giovinco wasn't going to get anywhere near this type deal in Europe and he has seemed to prefer to not to play for a Serie A side other than Juve. However, I'm still surprise the deal actually went through.
Toronto has a very large Italian American population which I imagine comprises a notable percentage of their (prospective) fan base so I suppose that may have been motivation to "overpay" to attract him.
