Get on Orbitz/Expedia/etc and get a rate for a hotel... Call the hotel and ask them for the best rate they can give you... say "AAA" and whatever the frick else you may be a member of...

When they quote you a rate, say something to the effect of: "Well, I'm looking at a rate online, but last time I booked through a third party, I arrived and they couldn't do anything about any discounts... But the rate I'm seeing a rate of $###.## which much lower than the rate you're quoting me with the discounts.. should I just book it on this website?"

9/10 times they say they'll match the price as long as it isn't TOO ridiculously below their quote.

I just booked a hotel in Upstate NY for a wedding.. Orbitz said, X, I was quoted Y, but I paid ~25% less after haggling with the reservation desk.

You're all welcome.

Or do blind booking and get it 10x cheaper than any of that.

ETA: But yes, you're right. Outside of blind booking, you can get a hotel to match any price from a third party. And it is a good idea to do that because there are benefits to booking directly through hotels.

The hptels pay a percentage of the rate to those 3rd party sites. They will always match the rate if you just call them. I thought this was known?

Locate the nearest plant or papermill to the hotel....Per say...in West Monroe...I'd like the Graphic Packaging rate...It's always the best rate for the salesman that stay every week....just locate the biggest industy by your hotel...

Just use your corporate discount? It is about 50% off.

Don't have a corporate discount? Look at the stock ticker, usually the code for that company. They require proof, but just act really embarassed and say you forgot your ID.

So your moral principles revolve around lying and deceit?

Yeah I've done "mystery 4 star guaranteed hotelk" on bookit and I've stayed in places for $85 that had a normal going rate of $400+ a night.

I ended up getting a hotel cheaper in Nashville through them then on any of the sites that weren't a blind booking.

Yep. Go in blind and you'll get the best rate. Way better than any 3rd party listing or anything you'll get from the hotel.

Live a little! Book blind!

I've had too many beers to explain bidding, but just use RateDrop.com

Pick star level, area of town, .. BOOM

"4 star for $70" or whatever.

You won't know what hotel it is until you pay for it, but the star ratings and areas of town are never wrong. 3 stars and above are all fine-great.

Find the best rate online - using AAA or whatever. Go inside and ask for their best rate. If it is cheaper, get it. If not, say you need the best or say you'll go down the street.

90% of the time, I get a better rate. If you are staying at a Marriott or Holiday Inn, you may can get a free (sit-down) breakfast as well.

I used to spend 26 weeks a year on the road - you figure out the tricks.

Oh, and use points for everything, get some free rooms for your own vacation.
