Download the Apple remote app for your iPhone.

Also, if you have a universal remote, see if it has built-in codes for Apple TV.

I'd still do myself a favor, if I were you, and program some old TV, vcr, dvd, etc remote so that something else can control it if you ever wind up in the situation where your iPad is somewhere else or broken or the like. If you've got 2+ apple devices all with one Apple ID this is less important, but if your iPad is the only thing you've got in the house to control it, I'd strongly consider making a backup with something that's likely already hanging around your house.

Appletv will learn any remote. Just go to to settings>remote>add remote

How do you do this if the remote doesn't work?
