The start of the Indy 500 used to be one crazy deal

Here is the 1971 pace car crashing into the photo-journalist stands to start the race (with John Glenn and Chris Schenkel onboard).

Man, I've never seen that.
Eldon Palmer, bad driver.

My sister road in the pace car in the mid 90's to start the race. She was with Anheuser Busch at the time.

I think he overheated the brakes. I don't think you are going to impress John Glenn with speed in a car.

I always loved the start where "coogan" ran over AJs car on the warmup lap, and AJ cussed on live TV.

That is what happens when you use a Dodge

formula one from the mid 80's and earlier was a crazy deal. The safety had not caught up with the speed.

The drunk redneck that stole the pace car at Talladega in 86 is pretty good. The cops chased him around the track and they set up a road block near the start finish line. Dragged his arse out of the car by the mullet and beat that arse

I grew up in Indy before starting school at Auburn and never leaving the South. There is almost nothing in the sporting world as exciting as the start of that race. Need to take my family to one of those things.

So your sister was a bud girl?

She was the head of Anheuser Busch Asia for a dozen years. A couple of pay grades above a Bud girl with a few more perks as well.

Wreck that got up into the stands, fire and all:
1973 start crash that got into the stands
This one changed a whole lot of the way things had been done.

And here's a mess that followed a few days later up in the same race, incredible:

Kevin Cogan. He claimed he broke a half-shaft, others claimed he just lost control.

It may have had the old drum brakes....plus they put a cone in pit row as a marker to let him know when to brake and somebody supposedly moved it.
Probably a bit of both
