Any advice on what to look for? I need 2 8x9ish doors (and possibly the motor) and i've never shopped for garage doors before.

i want insulated ones? Those are stronger?

wood or metal?

any particuular brand?

i like something more decorative..with windows maybe even.

Call a garage door company and get them to make suggestions. Whatever you do, do not try to do it yourself. The energy in the springs kill people if they don't know hwat they are doing. Even the "Professionals" get hurt.

I did metal painted to look like wood. Real wood doors are outrageous on cost. I think the ones I looked at would have cost me 8k. The metal ones with windows were closer to $2500 installed.

that's the only part that you have to pay attention to but it's not that big of a deal, you can install a 16x7 garage door buy yourself in a couple of hours after you've seen it done or have helped someone install one

Went to garage door company and looked at their selection and made a choice. FWIW, I have an insulated door that is hurricane rated.

thanks everyone! great suggestions!

i was looking at home depot but i'll give a couple local companies a call and give them a chance to offer a competitive bid.

i was thinking around $2000 for both and it sounds like i might have some options at that price.

thanks again

you'll be able to get both installed with openers and have the old ones hauled off for less than that, the overhead door companies will have a little better door than HD and a considerably better opener, good luck

I just installed a 12'wx9'h on my shed. Not the easiest thing ever but not terrible.

As far as tensioning the springs, like anything, stay out of the line of fire. They are dangerous but take your time and you'll be fine.

Note: I tensioned mine with1/2" x 1' long round bars that I cut from a piece from lowes. They worked fine. I'm not telling you to use them officially though.

they're not that big of a deal, go slow, have a good firm grip, 4 -1/4 turns per for +/- 2, usually 32 for an 8' opening, spring turns up

8' wide or 9' wide?

If you want to diy, check out this website www.directgaragedoors.com

I bought mine with 130mph wind rating for $1540, insulated with glass, low headroom track, and 3/4hp opener.

The cheapest I could find locally with this configuration was over $3k

it isn't that hard but there's also not a lot of labor in the install price, probably not a skill you'd use again, my Dad and some partners owned a couple of overhead door companies years ago and I ran one of them for a year in college
