Long time acoustic player, off and on for 20 years. (I suck, but not totally). I have 12 string Gibson but usually have 6 on it b/c I cant tune 12....

Anyway, been wanting to buy an electric but don't want a piece of shite. I don't mind if its used. Definitely want a strat. I know some are made in USA some in China and one is better than the other (at least what I've read). I would like to stay in the $500-$700 range since this is a hobby at best..

Any insight on what to look for:
* price range that is fair for used
* if I do buy used one, what do I need to be weary of
* where to buy from
* I'm assuming any small amp will do..

What else?

Also, wanting to learn basic blues (rhythm and easy lead stuff). Do you know any sites that have free lessons or basic instruction? (I know youtube has tons of vids)
How hard is it to learn basic slide?

TIA

if you're stuck on fender, try out some tele's. better instruments than strats IMO.

Wouldn't mind a tele. Why do you like those better?

personal preference. tone wise i think the tele is superior.

Strat probably has the weakest pickups out of any guitar being put out there.

tele's have a bit larger bridge pickups.
The bridge pickup on a tele is slightly farther away from the bridge and at a different angle which adds to higher output and also "hears" the strings in a slightly fuller sounding vibration zone- being closer to the neck means fuller tone.

teles typically have fatter necks.
No Trem means greater resonance from string to wood which seems to make for a more "solid" tone.

When you say fatter neck you mean the backside or the actual width of the fret board? I would actually like a wider fret board tbh since Im used to playing 6 strings on a 12 string neck.

I have a tele and two strats and I like them both. I wouldn't say one is better than the other because they both have their uses. They're just different. I probably play the strats more than the tele because they're more versatile.

eh, I don't care for strats, but that's personal preference.

i'll take a gibson SG over both of them or a rickenbacker 360.

Mexican made (what you should be looking for if you are looking for value and a bargain) - <$500

American made (fantastic guitars, but out of your $700 max price range) - <$900

Strats and Tele's are similar and completely different all at the same time. They are the same in that they are alder bodied, single coil, maple neck guitars. Strats are more versatile if you use your tone knobs to beef up the bridge pickup. If you want SRV tones, you need a strat.

The quality from a Mexi strat and USA strat would be negligible to a novice. Ive played and owned Mexi strats that were nicer, played better, and sounded better than USA's and vice verse. I currently own one strat,a 2012 USA
Strat in Jade Pearl with a maple neck and Fender Fat 50's pups. It is a monster guitar. I love it. It is not constructed any better than the 2006 Fender Deluxe Strat (mexi) that I owned. The USA sounds better because of the massive upgrade in pickup quality and prlly better tone wood selection.

If you are looking for a good entry level Fender Strat, then Mexi is the way to go. Ebay is the way to go if looking for bargain guitars.

Both of these look to be in great shape.
Fender Mexican Strat - Midnight Wine - $425

Fender Mexican Strat - Black - $425
