Anybody got any experience with this? My daughter is looking to apply.

How competitive is it to get in? I understand it's a pretty small program as far as numbers are concerned. Is a very good GPA and good references enough or do you have to ace the GRE also?

Any other info about the program that would be beneficial to know?

What do they even do these days without a Dewey Decimal System and index cards?

I actually know a guy who has that degree from LSU. He is a Federal Courts Librarian. I have no idea what he makes but it is probably pretty good.

Good luck to her.

I know someone who got that degree ten or so years ago. She's a nanny.

Librarians at that level aren't in it for the money.

Don't need to ace the GRE- that score is really only required by the Graduate School for admissions statistics. A good GPA is not required to be accepted; if the GPA is under a 3.0 then the student is placed on academic probation for the first three classes (can't receive loser than a 3.0 for the semester).

The school of Library and Information Science is not competitive, but mostly because they are the only game in the state. There are some big changes coming to the program in the next couple of years. Recently, they eliminated comprehensive exams and reduced the amount of credit hours to graduate from 40 to 36. So, complete 12 courses and graduate with a Masters degree.

And, if someone earns a MLIS and only makes $28k, then they are doing it wrong.

Also, there are plenty of opportunities for assistantships that help defray the cost of school.

$25k-$30K tops in the real world. I hope you discussed this aspect with her prior to wasting her time with this BS degree.

LOL the median salary for librarians is about $60k. Those with a master's degree earn up to $85k.

You know very little. A librarian could help you learn more.
