So I've been looking real hard at a new 336, and thought I wanted a 30-30. However, I came across the .308 Marlin Express and it really got my attention. Ballistics look pretty good:

160 gr. FTX Hornady
Muzzle: 2660/2513
100: 2438/2111
200: 2226/1761
300:2026/1457
400: 1836/1197
500:1659/978

..and coming out of this:

or something similar with a smaller optic. Thinking a 1.-4x20 or the like....

Anybody know of anyone with experience with the round? I would assume it would be hard to find as well. Might be something you'd have to stock up on every spring/summer.

ETA:

LEFT TO RIGHT:
.300 Savage, .308 ME, .308 Win

My wife got me a 336 for Christmas in 30-30.As I get older I find myself wanting to go back to the simple things.I am putting a Nikon Prostaff 2x7x32 on it.

You in Franklin Cty? Im about 1/2 a mile south of 98 5 miles east of Okhissa.

Unfortunately, I don't know anyone w/ a 308 ME. As long as it's sufficiently accurate and the bullet performs properly, it should be a very good round for deer hunting.

1+. Ammo availability would be the main concern for me. I'd worry about the long term viability of the 308 ME. I think Hornady is the only one to make ammo for it. I haven't looked lately, but component brass wasn't available for the handloader, although one could "make" ME brass from other, difficult to find brass. If you get one, I'd go ahead and buy a lifetime supply of ammo for it now.

Cool arse concept that never panned out.

I would prefer the .338 ME. Ammo will be equally hard to come by in both. Don't let that stop you though. Order a shitpile of it and kill things.

I saw some offerings in core lokt so there may be more companies that make it.

My BIL has one in stainless/laminated. Handy size, pretty accurate for a lever gun, pita finding ammo. Imo, I dont like leveroution ammo and this is what you will will want to be using out of it for any shots +100 yds.
they do look nice, just not my style of hunting rifle

I haven't, but that's not offered in the 336 platform. The .308 ME is a cool concept, but ammo availability is probably going to be a deal breaker. 30-30 will most likely be the route I go if and when I get it.

Nice concept but I don't think it will get very popular.
I like my lever guns to be smaller anyway.

Another one of those situations of "good gun w/ no ammo." I've got a 7-30 Waters Contender barrel but have never killed anything w/ it..... And at this point probably never will....
