This isn't mediocre. Its not elite. But it is also not mediocre. In fact, its quite above average.

Lets discuss the performance of his defenses at Clemson.

Amen.

His defenses weren't the total disasters some claim they were, but there are some numbers that should be questioned without someone being considered negative.

How did this get an anchor?

Are the admins anchoring everything that isn't sunshine pumping new coaches?

Same clemson Defense that let West Virginia hang 70 on them in the Orange Bowl a few years back

Not once have I seen this many stats posted for his tenure in Clemson. Not even close.

Our best defensive year we had 26th TOP and that is very good.

And how do you know the majority of credit for your TOP ranking shouldn't go to the defense? Your 3rd down conversion OFFENSE that year was ranked 60th. Your 3rd down conversion DEFENSE that year was 19th. Your rushing OFFENSE was 50th. Your rushing DEFENSE was 5th.

To the extent you had a good TOP, you can thank the defense.

I'm not saying you guys are necessarily going to have a terrible defense. Maybe Steele has learned a lot in his time w/ Saban, and you're still going to have a lot of talent on D. But his success or failure will be largely independent of the success/failure of the offense.

I guess there was too much sniping back and forth and some posts got deleted.

Too bad because I think discussing the actual numbers is worthwhile.

Its not like I'd quit being a fan if we sucked. I was in the stadium for every Curly Hallman home game.

I retract my statement to you then. People thinking the sky is falling are killing me these days.

Third time I e seen these exact stats posted. Doesn't merit an anchor though. IMHO.

He had a mediocre year, improved in year 2 to have good defense, and then one horrible, disaster year. The thing that scares me the most though is that Red Zone Defense and 3rd down defense is always really bad.

LSU RZ Defense 2014 #34
LSU 3rd Defense 2014 #30

LSU RZ Defense 2013 #46
LSU 3rd Defense 2013 #53

Btw, just heard a beat writer who covered Clemson during that time and he did not dispute that talent-wise there wasn't much to work with at that time. Hmmm.

I don't think you can pull much from these numbers. It really depends on what your philosophy is.

Steele will do fine....just reading thru some "post history"

11 5
5 11

6 5 1

So, looking at these past coaching records--who would you jump on to be the coach? None of these coaching records looks stellar.

Point being, stop "judging" past performance as the end-all-be-all as to a coaches ability. There are so many factors that go into winning. Having talent and having the right talent are different--sometimes it is just 1-missing piece.
