What are these games all about?

People love them and sink like 300 hours into them.

Are y'all jacked about 4 coming in March?

Should I try one of these out?

I'm a fan of RPG's, although it doesn't really seem like an RPG, more like a Shadow of the Colossus.

It's neither of these. It's an action game designed to played with others. You have targets/hunts or objectives in a map of connected arenas.

Involves an incredible amount of grinding for materials at end game + a ton of content (although most of it is recycled) is how people are able to spend time with them.

I played MonHun a bunch until other games in the genre came along.

I tried to like it but it was just bad. I got it for like ten bucks and still regret buying it. And I like those type of games.

Getting dropped into a fight with pre-made gear and getting your arse kicked by a low-tier boss without understanding anything about the game or how it works.

"game is bad, do not buy"

The demos for this game are supposedly famously bad.

I read they don't represent anything close to the game.

They don't.

Someone without any experience isn't going to just roll in and kill a Lagombi. And then they give you another one to kill a Plesioth. Experienced players have trouble with that one.

The game is awesome. Best thing about my Wii U. Game shines in multiplayer and if you have friends to play with. It gets very grindy in end game.

MH4U on 3DS will be by far the largest one to date. I've kept up with the amount of stuff to do in the japanese version which has been out for a long time and it's pretty obscene.

I would say get one of them, and if you like it get the other one too. 3U has a lot of monsters that aren't in 4U and vice versa. 3U has swimming in it and with that there are several monsters that can swim which won't be in 4U. The swimming mechanics are frustrating to deal with at times so I would say just get 4U. 4U also has a lot more classic monsters as in monsters that were in the first and second generation of Monster Hunter which I have a lot of nostalgia for, so I think I'll end up liking 4U more.

Neither game is going to really be easier or harder for a noob, you just kind of have to start somewhere. There is a lot to learn, but the game does a good job of giving you plenty of quests to do smaller tasks before it sends you to kill something big, and when it finally does it ramps up. You'll go from killing relatively small raptor-like bosses to large scale wyverns and everything in between so you'll have a lot of practice.

The games aren't for everyone, they haven't been very popular in America, and just because someone likes the difficulty of Dark Souls doesn't mean they'll like this. The combat is a lot more timing based and there's no lock-on feature. Just give it a fair chance and don't use the demo to judge it. The demos show such a narrow scope of the game.

It was. I remember loving some of the water based monsters like Lagiacrus and Ludroth but I hated how you had to hold the controller to do underwater combat effectively.

Steve, how many hours did you sink into 3?

Everything I've read online says people play this thing for like 350 hours

Not sure I'm ready for that....

That's optional. If you want to "beat" the game and kill every monster and beat every quest it's not going to take anywhere near 350 hours.

There is an obscene amount of weapons and armor you can craft. And some of the best in the game require some pretty rare materials that will take several hunts to find.

There are several different weapon classes that will take you a long time to master because each one is completely different. Technically you can just choose one type of weapon and beat the game with it.

It's like Dark Souls in the fact that you can spend 40-60 hours and beat the game, but there is nearly unlimited replayability if you choose to utilize it. I didn't play close to 350 hours, I know that much, it was well over 100 though. I would have played more if my life didn't get so busy last year.

You should try it, but I wouldn't pay full price. The game mechanics are super dated and it's not player friendly at all.

Should try any of the other similar games as almost all play better.

I disagree. As long as demo allows multiplayer, it's exactly the same. Only thing that'll be new is the new bosses (which all the same across this genre really). You don't learn any new skills or abilities, you have access to every attack from the start.
