in the past 8 years

Audits of life insurance company policies have uncovered more than $31 million in Unclaimed Property for beneficiaries in the past eight years, according to State Treasurer John Kennedy.

The Treasury Department discovered the benefits after comparing the outstanding policies of a dozen insurance companies with the Social Security Death Master File. The reviews turned up a number of policies, including one $500,000-plus payout, where heirs didn’t realize the policies existed.

That's really not a lot. Over 8 years for an entire state.

Curious question here. My late fiance is named in this unclaimed treasury thing for a payout from a class action lawsuit he was involved in.

No one ever opened probate on his estate and I made no claim on anything he had. In fact, I packed his material possessions carefully, with notes of their significance and gave those to his children.

I turned over substantial amounts of money as well. I loved him for him and not for the money. I kept a few thousand that his mother knew was for me and he had told his mother that often that thay acct was for me.

The money in the unclaimed fund is money that he planned on for our future, to buy a camp on the water for us. I do not know the amount in the unclaimed fund because it is over the limit of the amount they will show.

If I were to open probate to claim it, do I then have to notify his family so that they get a share of it? ( I am no longer in touch with his scattered family).

Also how much would it be to open probate to claim this money?

did he leave a will naming you as the recipient of this, or as a residuary beneficiary?

If not, alert the kids.
