I was asking myself this question and I think he is. We all know he has the worst fricking hands in the NBA and can't catch the ball on any given day, and he can't make a fricking lay-up from 0 feet away. But even despite that, he's supposed to be an elite defender and an elite rebounder and I don't see that either. He probably gives up about 10 offensive rebounds a game to the other team and he seems to pull a lot of guys down by the jersey to get the ball on a rebound and gets a foul. I don't know guys but I really do not think Omer Asik is a good ball player at all and to me, he's a big liability, and he is definitely the most frustrating player to watch. Thoughts?

Not a liability. If he was in the game to start the 4th, we win this game.

He is near the top in the league in rebound rate.

His per 36 minutes are 10 ppg and 14 rpg.

We need a big body who can withstand the bulk and strength of the other big men in the league.

Any questions of his defense I feel fall on the coach as the whole team has been relatively poor in regards to their talent.

He is also turning the ball over at a lower rate than his whole career.

Considering what Jeff Green went for and what the Nugget's are asking for Wilson Chandler (a first round pick), do any of y'all wish the Pel's had gone that direction in the offseason instead of using the pick on getting Asik?

Well we have plenty of scoring so we don't need an offensive player.

Without Asik though the Pels are playing Davis more as a center. We also would have little legit relief to bang with the bigger and stronger teams in the NBA.

But has the defense really improved with the addition of Asik? Y'all are 24th in defensive efficiency, which seems mind boggling for a team with Asik, AD, and Jrue.

No, because even with a competent SF the things we would trot out at center would make me want to shoot a pelican...mascot.

Coaching

There is a reason everyone is calling for Monty to be fired.

Don't forget Cunningham and EG, that is what makes it baffling.

No team has great defensive players across the board, but typically good coaching paired with a few good defensive players can anchor a team.

We see it with Chicago, San Antonio, Houston (during asik and during howard), GS, and Dallas.

He's 5th in the league in rebounding rate

People focus on his hands. Somehow he's coralling a shite ron a rebounds. He had no offense game ever... In the course of his NBA career. People were either clueless on him or expected him to all of a sudden develop an offensive game?

As for his defense.. How many times per game does the opposing team blow past his perimeter defender.. Asik steps up to help out, and that opposing team dishes to the big for two. Or he stays with his man in the same scenario and the guy has a clear path to the goal

Defense from the 2 and 3 has been nonexistent. Holiday plays good D every other game. Anderson and Davis has been suspect. Asik cannot do it all on his own. People are putting blame on the wrong person

How can a 7 foot ogre not have the hand strength to hold onto the ball? He lacks definition and stamina and could really benefit from some serious offseason work. I don't know if you can get him good enough to make layups, but you should be able to make him strong enough to hold onto the ball and get fouled rather than blocked when he's in traffic.

No. He has his weaknesses, but a liabilty? Yea right. The Spurs won with Tiago Splitter at Center. The Heat won with Chris Andersen and Joel Anthony at Center. The Celtics won with Kendrick Perkins at Center. Those guys were liabilities.

Don't include Splitter in that conversation. He is an amazing defender.

The defense has been fine with Asik and Davis on the court, and a dumpster fire with any other combination of bigs. Davis is probably still a slightly below average defender at this point and Anderson's defense is worse than Asik's offense. Also does not help that outside of Holiday, we have zero perimeter defenders before the Pondexter acquisition. Remember that Cunningham has overwhelmingly played at PF for his career and is not used to chasing guys around out there. Some of it is certainly on Monty who still insists on hard hedges with Davis that take him completely out of the play.

Asik is an elite defensive rebounder and rim protector. The Pels are one of the best rebounding teams in the league with Asik on the floor, and are still in the top half of the league in Defensive Rebound Rate despite playing Ryan Anderson (who ranks 62 out of 67 PFs in DRR) big minutes.

For the record, Asik ranks 5th in the league for Centers in DRR, tied with some dude named Dwight Howard. I get that watching Asik is not pretty and he has hands of stone, but he has a couple elite skills that good teams need, and he does those things as well as anyone in the league.
