Dexter? True Detective?
seen and enjoyed both. After this move I'm not going to have any premium channels (shite's a lot more expensive when you're paying by yourself ha), that's why I suggested mainly OD/Netflix.

3. Use subtitles. It helps TREMENDOUSLY.
This is a foreign concept to me. I've only ever used subtitles like twice and it was during a foreign language movie where it was a necessity. I feel like that would be distracting reading along while also trying to listen to what's happening and watch the background too. How important are the subtitles in GOT?

I never really did it either, at least not regularly, until GoT.
For one, sometimes it's hard to understand what they're saying in their weird accents. Another helpful thing is that it sometimes tells you the name(s) of the people talking. Also tells you songs playing, noises heard, etc...lots of helpful shite to help you follow along. Also, as weird as it sounds, seeing peoples' names spelled out is actually pretty helpful.
If you absolutely can't stand it, then I'd say don't use them. But I'd at least try it for sure. I thought it would be distracting, but it really isn't (for me).

Gotcha. On Demand where I am is mostly premium channels, except for recently aired episodes.
I am gonna recommend Rectify, again. If you are more into action and fast pacing, it might not be for you, but if you like authentic drama, pitch-perfect dialog, and character depth, maybe check it out. Aden Young's work as Daniel Holden is some of the best acting you will find on TV.
If you want a quick run and done, try Terriers. Aired on FX a few years ago and cancelled after one season due to a terrible promotional campaign, but was quite good.
Also, check out the BBC stuff I listed. Looks like some might be leaving Netflix soon.
So:
Rectify
Sherlock
Happy Valley
Wallander (Kenneth Branagh)
The Fall
Top of the Lake
The Silence
Rake
Terriers

Not that anyone gives even the slightest shite, but wanted to give a quick update. GOT was probably my #1 "want to watch", but things came up and I didn't really have the time yet to devote to it so it's on the backburner.
I started out with IASIP and holy crap that was not a mistake. Show is hilarious. I'm currently early in season 3. I have also as of Wednesday been interspersing House of Cards as well. Typically watch 1 HOC and 1 or 2 AS a night. After HOC is finished I'm going to start tackling GOT. Just wanted to say thanks for the recommendations!

I finally watched a couple episodes of About A Boy when I was home visiting my parents earlier this month. Really glad I did. Burned through the entire show to date in about 10 days of spot watching. Really well-written and the character "growth" (outside of the boy) has been minimal (like in real life) but believable.
My current best 30-minute comedies on TV:
1. Archer
2. Modern Family
3. Bob's Burgers(about to drop if it doesn't get it's mojo back)
4. About a Boy
5. The Middle
I miss Raising Hope.

I'll admit it. I used subtitles at times while watching The Wire.
