Is there a bigger marketing lie than "makes up to 12 cups of coffee"

If I fill up a coffee maker that says it makes 12 cups, I get MAYBE 5 out of it. I fill mine up to 6 every morning and get 2 cups

I'll never figure out the metric system

Cup = 8 oz
Your oversized 18 oz "cup" =\= an actual cup

No no no, I'm talking 8oz cups here
Posted on 1/10/15 at 3:33 pm to Tiger1242
It's probably referring to the measurement cups and not receptacle cup.

A cup is a unit of measurement and I guess that is what they are saying. It's misleading for sure but not a lie.

I agree with the OP. Even for 8oz cups

Then are you filling the reservoir all the way up and accounting for water that will evaporate during brewing?
I've never run into an issue of a coffee maker not making 12 full, 8oz cups of coffee I guess.

Here's a bigger one.
Uber claiming that you can make 90k/year as a driver.

so this is what you deleted earlier?

I do make strong coffee, so maybe I get more evaporation than most people bc it has more beans to get through

Cup of coffee = 6 oz.
Posted on 1/10/15 at 3:36 pm to Tiger1242
A "cup of coffee" is 4 oz.

Mine too. For just my husband, I fill it up to 4 and he gets one largeish mug out of that.

Now I have seen, "a cup of coffee is 8oz, 6oz, 4oz" in this thread alone. Which is it people?
Posted on 1/10/15 at 3:40 pm to Tiger1242
Depending on the brand, they consider a "cup" of coffee to be between 4 and 6 ounces, rarely 8. I've seen 4, 5, and 6.

I just measured it with an 8 oz cup measure, and a cup on my coffee maker came out to be 6 oz. (My "4" water line on the coffee maker is 3-8oz cup measures full, which would be 24 oz.; 24/4 = 6 oz.)
A regular-sized mug filled to about 3/4" from the top is 8 oz. 6 oz in that mug goes just above halfway. I guess if you leave room for a lot of creamer, then a coffee-maker "cup" would be about right in a normal mug. If you drink it black or with little cream, then you'll obviously need more coffee.
