State Supreme Court Rules Teen Can't Refuse Chemo
quote:
17-year-old girl Cassandra believes that the state cannot make her undergo potentially life-saving chemotherapy. The state, however, said she's too young to make that decision.
quote:
The teen's mother, Jackie Fortin of Windsor Locks, says that her daughter does not want the toxins and does not want people telling her what to do with her body.
Fortin said she wants Cassandra to beat her cancer, but believes that state should not be able to force her to undergo chemo. She said that if her daughter were a mere one year older, it'd be her own decision.
quote:
A judge recently ordered Cassandra to have the treatment, despite the family searching for other treatments and second opinions.
After two such treatments, the family said the teen ran away from home.
The Department of Children and Families stepped in and put the girl in protective custody. It said Fortin failed to give her daughter the chemo.

State Supreme Court Rules Teen Can't Refuse Chemo
quote:
The state's highest court reviewed that series of events under an emergency appeal filed by lawyers for the girl and her mother, taking up an issue decided by several other states — whether some minors are mature enough to make decisions about their own bodies. On Thursday, the judges decided that Cassandra is not mature and will continue to receive chemotherapy.

frick this current government. What the frick are they even doing meddling in people's personal lives?
Good Lord. It's a 17 year old refusing treatment not a mother actively hurting an infant.

I get what you're saying, but I just want to clarify that this is a Connecticut issue and no fed involvement (yet?)

I've know a couple of people who said they refused treatment and cured their cancer with diet changes. I assume they were telling the truth.

Connecticut doesn't have a government?

The Link in the OP has a live stream of the court hearing (and it's going on right now). Pretty cool if you are a legal nerd.

I thought you were talking about the fed gov in your first comment. My bad.

What type of cancer?
What's the response rate to the proposed therapy?
What are the real research-backed alternatives?

Does any of this matter?

One would be incredible but " a couple" of people you know refused treatment for cancer and beat it with diet changes?? I gotta throw out the bs flag.

I was with the family until "toxins," now I'm on the fence.

Yea, I didn't say I would refuse treatment.

Exactly. So she doesn't want the "toxins" because they are harmful but she has cancer. What? That's illogical, and why I asked the questions I did previously.

If you had a paper cut and I wanted to stab you with a machete and you said no, I could use that same exact "logic" to stab you.

She said that if her daughter were a mere one year older, it'd be her own decision.

So, the cancer is the paper cut and the chemotherapy is the machete. Gotcha.

I'm with her. Chemo is cancer.
Granted, I have no idea what I would do in that situation, but I sure as hell don't think the government should be able to force you into any specific treatment. It's not like this is some form of communicable disease.

So the decision should be her mother's. Not the government's.
This is all kinds of fricked up. Governmental over reach.
