You have to want to be homeless in this day right? So many shelters, section 8. You have to want it bad to be without shelter in 20 degree weather.
And another thing. If you choose to be homeless, how the frick can you live up North? -50 degree temps and you homeless in Minnesota?

being homeless is not a choice

Though I understand your premise, it very often is. Homeless people just never think of it that way.

This is a very, very ignorant statement.
How many conversations have you had with homeless people?

really? Maybe the reason they are homeless is because they like to stay fricked up and realize they won't receive any help as long as they want to stay fricked up.

My wife's best friend's fiance has told me several times that if it wasn't for his kid, he would prefer to be homeless. He doesn't like to work.

Or the result of serious mental health issues that aren't treated.

Many are mentally ill and have substance abuse problems, this leads to behavior that families and shelters wont tolerate and thus are homeless.

I wouldn't say people "want" to be homeless, but absent mental issues you either have to be a pretty severe frick up or be extraordinarily unlucky to be long-term homeless.

The truly needy ones are usually mentally disabled and have nobody to care for them. They don't know how to seek help. The ones that panhandle for a living can go frick themselves.

Many homeless have underlying psychiatric conditions that do not allow to function in normal society.

What time was that? I saw on the news last night that the "warming shelter" in Slidell was open only until 7am....which seemed a bit odd to me.

that's just ridiculous. a very high percentage of homeless are mentally ill and didn't have the support structure to provide them proper help. they attempt to self-medicate and are stuck in an intractable cycle.
