How far do you go to cover your scent?

I am fairly new to hunting. I went on my first hunt ever last weekend at a local WMA. My buddy took me out there so I can get a feel for hunting and being in the woods. As we drove out there, we started talking about the scent free products. He said he is usually pretty anal about covering his scent and that if we were going to his lease he would have been worried about the contact with my dogs prior to leaving.
I then started to google how to wash and dry your hunting clothes, storing your clothes between hunts, etc.. Some of the things I read were pretty elaborate. I was curious how far does the members of the OB go to cover their scent or are all of the scent free products a marketing ploy.

For the most part this is the case, especially if hunting from a stand.

Hunt downwind of the deer. More important than all the products.
If you are in a ziploc upwind of a deer they will smell you.
I think those products are good for a swirling wind although I killed a doe at 25 yards this yr that came straight downwind of me and never smelled me. I had some doe pee nearby so maybe that calmed her.

I use a scent blocker spray. I use it mainly because after Mrs.Point washes my clothes I smell like spring time breeze. I figure that deer probably don't come across spring breeze this time of year.

Check weather.com and look at your stands on a map...? or:
ScoutLook or
Huntstand app

You can only take it so far without it getting ridiculous.
I use scent free soap before a hunt and I generally wash my hunting clothes in scent free detergent with no UV brighteners. (Just look at some of the nighttime game camera pics to see the difference in clothes that have been treated with UV brighteners). I then hang the clothes up to dry. Outside if not raining, inside if it is. I also try to wear rubber boots or at least something like muck boots with the rubber (whatever it is) bottoms.
However, I know that I drive to the camp in the same truck I drive in every day. So, I know I have some scent on me. I don't spray myself with any scent killer or anything.
Basically, I have to bathe, wash clothes and wear some kind of footwear anyway. Since I have to do that, I generally try to minimize those scents. I don't take any further steps.

I hunt a bunch of ladder stands, so I take compass readings from stand and from looking at topo maps already know the "most likely" bedding areas, so I know what winds are best, iffy or bad.
Make sure its in your face and the deer are coming from that direction.

Personally I believe being quiet and still far outweighs scent covering. I know everyone says this, but pow pow killed dozens of deer smoking non-filtered lucky strikes in the stand. I'd say it can't hurt to use cover scent, but how much it actually helps will probably never be proven.

It doesn't matter what you do if you don't hunt the wind accordingly...

I wash my hunting clothes in Winn dixie or Walmart brand scent and dye free detergent. I try to change out of sweaty clothes between hunts if I can. And if bowhunting I shower in scent free stuff and use scent free deodorant.
If hunting WMA I walk the swamp so I don't do anything but try to walk with wind in my face. Half the time I wear jeans.

You also can't force deer to come out where you want them to. Bucks have been known to circle downwind of grunting and rattling before coming in, and no cover scent is going to make you undetectable. I hunt almost exclusively in ladder stands and climbers in thick woods, and have only been busted once or twice, when I bumped something getting into position. Do what you want, but I'm convinced they trust their ears more than their nose.

Yes, the wind sometimes shifts and buck will will normally circle to wind you. If you are smelling like bacon you will be busted. I dont go to extremes, but will wash clothes in scent free wash, store closes with baking soda and leaves, spray scent cover before entering woods, and usually have a scent bomb down wind of me.

My method has yet to fail.
