The damaged laptop displays message "no hard drive found" during power up. I know absolutely nothing about troubleshooting these type of issues and was wondering what I can do, if anything, to retrieve pictures of my daughter.
Any help?
Any help?

I did try reseating it, but received same message
My line of thinking was to plug an external hard drive to it hoping it resolve the problem...
I'm guessing that's not going to help

You can buy a usb adaptor for the hard drive to hook it up to a different computer. You would likely need a sata to usb one. They are pretty inexpensive, $30 or so. If you hear any clicking noises, the drive is toast and you would need to have a data recovery company retrieve the data. We're a Drivesavers partner. Expensive but the best in the industry.
The other thing you can try to do is boot to a usb flash drive with Linux on it and see if Linux sees the other hard drive.

If so and its done, just take it to a professional for data recovery.

If the HDD is shot and you can't get to it using Windows there is a way to get your data using Ubuntu. I had to do it once on an HDD I had that failed.

ETA: Is the HDD clicking when you turn on the PC?

Feel your pain. After having gone thru this with some irreplaceable pictures being lost, I now Carbonite and don't think twice about the $59

No clicking sound on the HDD. I'll give Ubuntu a look...looks dummy proof...hopefully
