They finally put up the cable barriers along I-20, yet in so many spots there's parts where people have already taken them out and or the cables are loose as hell. Did they just throw it all up and then just say frick it when someone tears it up? Been that way for over a month now:

They do get repaired. The ones on I10 were slow at first, but I think once the contractor gets the process down it will speed up.

ETA, where are the lights on that light standard?

Do they actually stop cars from going across?

Hell yes, one of the best additions to I10 between BR and NOLA. Not sure on statistics, but those crossover crashes are nearly unheard of now. They were ridiculous aftef Katrina.

There's a spot outside of Bossier where a car full of 4 teenagers crossed over the median and hit a car head on killing 3 of them. Sad that that happened before the barriers ever got put up.

Yep, saved the life of a family member of mine.

Dude, if they saved your life twice because you ran off the road, you're lucky; if they saved your life from other people running off the road, then you're unlucky...I would only drive highways with cable barriers!

Pretty sure that if you hit them and are at fault, your insurance company has to pay the repairs, might be part of why it takes so long to repair?

It's DOT, did you really expect it to be quick?

Same story here in Tennessee. They place the barriers right up against the passing lane, and they are frequently broken, which means they have no tension and are not operational. They can't repair them fast enough. The cables often lay on the ground for months before repair.

One little accident, and they are out of service for months longer.

They install them way too close to the road, so they get hit way to often. They don't stop crossover accidents when they are laying down like they usually are in some sections.

No, it's just been bothering me everytime I pass by a section that's missing 6 poles and the cables are hanging on the ground.

Why is that on some sections of interstate they're closer to one side, then on down they'll be closer to the other side? Why not put them in the middle of the median?

As a motorcyclist I am not a fan. I'll take my chances on one in a million head on crossover crahses versus losing virtually all of the runoff in every other conceivable accident scenario.

The fact that so many areas are in a constant state of disrepair does not mean that every cable guard struck was a car that was destined for the other lane. The reason many of the cable barriers are struck is the fact they are only a few feet from traffic in some cases.

I'm sure a study was done but it seems like the lifetime maintenance of this system may have offset the initial cost of a concrete barrier in the center of the median.

Saw a car go off the road yesterday on I-10 and the cable stopped him from going across. He would have hit someone head on otherwise.

They had a lot of people in those one in a million crashes in South Louisiana before these barriers. Think a car full of kids was one.

I'm so glad DOTD got their priorities straight and got all the soundwalls up before they started wasting money on cable barriers.

maybe you should drive a car instead of being a trashy loser with a motorcycle

If they are dead in the middle they are not as effective. Basically the suspension of the car is in full compression and more likely to go under the cables.

Maybe someone can be more descriptive, but that is how I remember it being explained.

That may be true, but they are way to close to the lanes in this area for something that is basically inoperable after one hit.
