Under or flip over. Just to one side, the cars are usually not high enough to flip over it, and on the other side, the suspension is coming up from the car basically bouncing out of the ditch and hitting the up slope on the side with the cables.

Hopefully that explains it a little more. It works in my mind

Eta: the short and sweet of it has to do with cars either flipping over it or driving under/over it

I've always wondered why the cables are usually closer to one side than the other. Seems like they should be in the middle. Anybody know?

No doubt.

There is also a lot of people that struck cable barriers that were only a few feet from traffic that would have slowed and stayed in the available median runoff area.

My point is it is my opinion the benefit of the cable barrier may be offset by the safety hazard of loss of available runoff area. On the "near" side the runoff area is reduced to nothing.

I think a concrete barrier in the center would have been better.

And I'll take a bet that after 10 years of having to constantly rebuild these systems you'll see concrete barriers going up.

Because it typically is the highest area. The middle of the median is a low section and the vehicle can be over it. The reason for the staggering of sides is maintenance, grass cutting etc...

I will take a cable barrier over concrete everytime.

Concrete barriers are destroyed regularly and take a lot more time/money to rebuild. The barriers on I10 east are repaired suprisingly fast.

If I had to guess there are existing utilities and/or storm sewer lines/catch basins in the center that would conflict with a deep footing/posts for the cable rail. Some states do have them in the center.

A solution for a concrete barrier would be a thinner spread footing that a concrete barrier would sit on.

From LINK

quote:

The middle is often a low spot, so there’s a “distinct possibility” of an errant vehicle vaulting over the cables. The soils are often poor, said Kent Barnard of MnDOT.

If one direction of the freeway is higher than the other, that side of the median gets the cable. Engineers also review which side of the road has had more drivers zooming into the median. They’ll place the cable on the opposite side to give the veering drivers more room to recover on their own

Modular sections of barrier is the answer here. Pour a pad with anchors and change out the sections that get damaged. Also, less will get damaged with the barrier in the center as available runoff will be utilized.

Yeah, they are too close to the passing lanes on whatever side they are installed. Their proximity to traffic means that they spray debris all over the road during minor accidents which may not even have involved a crossover.

I think concrete or metal barriers may have been a better choice if mounted farther from the actual road. At least they still seem to work after minor glancing accidents.

Hm I wonder if failing to repair them could open the gov up to liability if someone crossed over an injured persons in another vehicle...
