Now that national champions have to play 15 games (14 if you play in the Big 12), the need for depth is even more important than ever.

85 scholarships were designed for 11 games.

Urban just brought this up on the OSU men's broadcast on ESPN2.

Maybe they could also solve this by getting rid of the redshirt and giving everyone 5 years of eligibility. I know that has been brought up before.

Doubtful. 85 is more than enough.

I would support that. Raising the limit to 90 would give out 600 more scholarships FBS-wide.

Ohio State didn't have a back-up QB on it's roster against Alabama (aside from a player that would have to burn his redshirt to hand off for 3 minutes of game time).

Also, the depth at defensive and offensive line could use a boost as well.

Not a chance. Title XIV requires an equal number of women's scholarships. You gonna increase the size of the volleyball team, too?

That's a fluke. Y'all had 3 going into the year. LSU made it through the entire season with 2 on scholarship. Its just one of those random parts of the game that nobody can control.

Oregon lost two starters due to the 15 game schedule.

There is just more games for impact players to get hurt and these teams need more guys to fill the gaps at a high level.

The NFL plays more games and has fewer players on roster. This argument just doesn't add up for me.

On average, the gap between the second string players on a college team is much greater than the gap between the two on a professional team.

ETA: They also can sign players off practice squads. So they have an unlimited pool really.

What if Nick Saban asks for it?

Well then perhaps the answer is being more selective about which players get one of those coveted 85 spots. Teams with depth will win. Recruit fewer grade risks, fewer discipline risks, fewer risks to go the NFL early.

Raising the scholarship limit is problematic in more than one way, especially considering that college football teams churn through players anyways. Creating more opportunities for this would just promote some of the abuses that already occur (e.g., oversigning, greyshirting, "processing").

And I've already mentioned the Title XIV situation, which is a serious institutional roadblock.

I'm sure these schools could find 5 teams that could use an extra scholarship on the women's side.

That's not even a concern IMO.

At every NCAA institution in FBS? I wouldn't be so sure. Maybe Ohio State could do it. But what New Mexico State? Programs like that already lose money. Now you're asking them to pay for 10 more athletes.

the only reason to raise the scholarship limit is to screw mid majors and non traditional power schools out of getting players.

get outta here tryna dress it up w/a protect the players argument when NCAA teams have 30 more scholarship players than the NFL has on their full roster.

Exactly. This rule change would inevitably force a radical reorganization of FBS football. The small schools would need to relegate. They would lose money and talent.
