My New Years resolution is the same ol lose weight thing. I am starting a carb cycling diet along with a regular workout regimen on Monday. Has anyone had good results doing this? I'm 5'10" at 220lbs and 28% BF as I have been lazy and not really into the gym like I should.

Be REALLY careful with the carb diet. Of course you want to limit BAD carbs, but if you don't do it right you can totally whack your metabolism up. Assuming you want to lose 25 or 30 lbs,I'd limit calories, graze a bit, and not eat after dinner.

Here is what worked for me:
Protein in the morning. 250 calories or less.
Mid morning fruit or protein.
Lunch. 250 calories or less.
Nuts ,salad, veggies. yogurt or cheese snack snack.
Dinner (BEFORE 7 PM) 250 calories or less.
Don't eat for 12 hours minimum until breakfast.
In 90 days you will be about where you want.

Buy an pedometer and try to get as close to 70,000 steps a week as you can or hit the gym.

EDIT-Cheat every week and have something you like to keep yourself from going crazy. For me it's still healthy-Lebanese food.

I actually went to the gym quite frequently during the past 2 years. I just got a new job and had a nagging shoulder pain that made me lazy and kept me out of the gym for about 4 months.

I'm not really a New Years resolutioner, just getting back into the swing of things and it happens to be the new year.

the eating right part will be the biggest thing

unless medically necessary, there's really no need for any kind of special diet program. all you need to do is consume less than you burn every day

1) calculate your TDEE LINK /

2) eat 80% of your TDEE (or 500 calories less than your TDEE)

3) log every single thing you eat (myfitnespal is great), making sure to stay under your daily calorie goal

4) lose weight

Yeah I exercised myself into chronic back issues. Turns out all that pounding really hurt my back. All I can do now is walk. Mrs Pimp is in the gym two hours a day. All I can do is walk, MAJOR psychological adjustment.

Weight loss is 90% diet, I'm convinced.

this is only 900-1000 calories. This is very unhealthy. He would lose these twenty pounds in 2 weeks

Unless your a complete fat arse you don't need to low carb. I lost 16lbs of fat and am in the best shape of my life by just being consistent on my workouts and cardio every week and eating less. Still drank beer on weekends and eat the food I want. FYI: I'm 45 years old so getting older is a bullshite excuse as well.

REALLY bad and simplistic advice. Many, many people have weird hormonal issues. I actually did a test with my doctor when I weighed 235 and my wife weighed 94. We ate exactly the same food and portions for three weeks. She weighed 92 at the end. I weighed 239.I ate like a bird for three weeks and I gained 4 lbs.

For me it was about eating CERTAIN foods AND calories-not just calorie restriction. And also WHEN I ate and what my maximum calorie intake was PER MEAL.

You can't tell me there isn't a big HORMONAL and GENETIC component. My kids grew up eating the same thing. Two are skinny, one has a weight issue. It was kind of the luck of the draw, IMHO.

Actually it's around 1200 with almonds, salads, cheese , yogurt etc. And 1200 is fine.

This is the reason no one stays on track. bullshite diets.

Figure out your maintenance calories, then subtract about 500 from that. That's a pound a week. Track your food and live a normal life.

You can't be serious. If you and your 94lb wife ate the same exact food/portions for 3 weeks, you gained weight because you ate too little, and likely put your body in a state of shock/stress.

Since you're the expert here, I shouldn't have to tell you that a 235lb male and 94lb female have different daily nutritional needs.

Timing and meal size is also largely irrelevant, as long as you stay under for the day.

OK you guys win. I'll let my physician know.
Hormones, timing, caloric in-take, meal-size , age, metabolism are irrelevant.
I figured he was a quack, but since he had successfully supervised thousands of patients with weight loss, I foolishly thought I'd heed his advice. Next time, I'm coming to the OT so they can tell me to eat less and exercise more.

This is pretty much Weight Watchers which works IF you don't lie about your points.

of course they are
quote:

but since he had successfully supervised thousands of patients with weight loss
so you think he prescribes the same plan to everyone. 250 cal for lunch dinner and breakfast and two snacks.

Without addressing the patients full profile?

So in that way, burning more than you are eating is a lot more accurate than a one size fits all 'here are your restrictions' diet.

Not bashing, but I also think taking someone down to 1200 or less calories a day is not always the best advice.

What part of "YOU WIN" do you guys not understand?
You win.
A physician and his dietician who specializes in weight loss gave me bad advice on my personalized diet, exercise plan and life.
The OT gave me the advice I should have had.

To be fair, eat less move more works IF you have some baseline knowledge of good and bad food. You'd be surprised how many people just don't. My wife was helping her co worker lose weight and she had been eating nothing but ice berg salads with some sugary dressing and dried fruit and thougjt she was saying super healthy. Not even realizing she was only eating sugar and water and that that's bad.
