5-2 Defense at LSU

If Pendergast goes with his current philosophy:
Beckwith and CG3 at linebacker.
Valentine at NT, with Godchaux and LaCouture at DT flanked by Hunter and Bower at DE.
White and Robinson at CB with Mills and Adams at safety.
Does that sound about right? Who would start if this became our base formation?

Switch Robinson with Tolliver and I just might get wet.

he runs the defense to fit the players

CG has to earn his way on the field still and KT2 is going to pass Robinson if he is even on the team next year. Rest looks good if he actually ran a 5-2. His base defense is a modified 3-4 with OLBs towards the line of scrimmage.

It's not 5 down linemen. It would be sione or debo at the LOS standing up next to the 4 down I believe.

This would work mixed with and aggressive nickel dime defense.

No, he runs a 3-4. But his one year at USC he ran a 5-2 because that's what they had the players for. He sprinkled in the 3-4 by having linemen not down on the line every so often.

I didn't think anyone outside of high school coaches still ran a 50 defense. It's basically a 3-4 with less athletic olb's.

Ultimately this. He's not a one trick pony.

this is a very accomplished coach who coached in the college ranks and NFL that turned defenses around and got them to the freaking super bowl.
pendergast is the real deal

My future son-in-law is a huge USC fan. He says CP would be a wicked choice, especially with our athletes.
He adapts his D to his players and loves pressure!!!

It's a 3-4 under, so it only appears as if there are five linemen.

Its difficult for linemen to block against, mathematically impossible if you bring pressure

I would love to see the 5-2 scheme ran here at LSU. Our players fit that scheme nicely and Pendergast surely knows how to run it. Our QB pressure has been terrible and this will help out with pressure. Our ends are athletic enough to jam TEs and drop in coverage if needed.

5-2 isn't feasible in this day and age. Too many receivers on the field. You may have the perfect personnel for it, but a 5-2 isn't defending a 4 wide set
5-2 isn't a scheme and it's shocking to read otherwise here. It's basically a goal line defense.

CP has a base philosophy on a 3-4 defense. It's the same defense Bama runs. We are not set up to run a 3-4 defense. You need space eaters on the front line. We are catered to speed. CP would easily adjust his philosophy to a multiple front. It would be a great get if we get him. A true defensive coordinator with bot college and NFL experience with success.

Line up is incorrect. He calls it a 5-2 but it is actually a 3-4 under. Keeps people from confusing it with a straight 3-4.
Pendergast ran a 3-4 under USC. Looks like a 5-3/3-4. Has elements of a 4-3 under, which is what Pete Carroll ran at USC (and Saban used at times at LSU).
