Lowes is awesome. They're open late have a lot of stuff. Your right in saying the employees song have a bunch of knowledge so figure out what you want before you go. You can usually find someone that can show you where the stuff you need is (not necessarily how to use it).

Or they'll have some dork that thinks he knows everything. When you ask for a #10 pan-head 1" stainless steel screw he'll ask, "well, what are you using it for?" Doesn't matter what I'm using it for douche, tell me what drawer contains that screw. Lowe's people like that rile me up. Thankfully, they're not all that way.

I hate their service except in the paint department. They usually have good people working there at the location by my house. So I would say you are spot on with the employees part. I love Lowes though. I usually know what I want or what I'm looking for so I don't deal with their employees much. I also like their tool selections.

Go to your local Ace or whatever mom & pop hardware store if you have questions or issues that need troubleshooting or advice.

I always use the contractors entrance. There is usually 4-5 people just hanging around down there.

Lowe's is basically wal mart for tools and home improvement. If you expect their staff to help you figure out how to fix something, you are a fool. Join the rest of the world and learn how to use google to figure out how to do something.
If the employees just couldn't help you find soemthing, then shame on them. That's where Lowes usually has good customer service.
