Have about 20 average diameter pine tree stumps to remove. Budget is my main concern, so I'd naturally go with the rental, but I feel like one of those small machines couldn't handle those stumps in one day. So multi day rental might not be worth the savings over a professional if I have to manhandle one of those for 2 days. What says the OB?

It is not that easy even with a big machine. If you think you're up for it, give it a try. My honest advice is to get someone to do it and remove the shavings after they're done

i tried using one of the rental ones. They suck arse big time and don't even go deep enough to do any good.

I made the mistake one time of renting some chainsaws that were about as sharp as butter knives.

I'd just hire someone. I did it myself in my yard and busted my butt all day long for 10 stumps. Let the guys with the right equipment come in and save your back and time.

It really isn't worth it to do yourself. If you buy your own grinder the odds are you aren't ever going to use it that much. If you rent one you find that it wasn't taken care of and you get results as posted above. It might be different if you had 5 or so to do but you've got 20. You might pay a bit more for someone to come do it but you've got to factor in how much your time is worth.

I've rented augers, splitters, trenchers and stump grinders from HD. All were ok shape, but the stump grinding is not something I'll do again. It's just easier to pay someone with heavier equipment who does that stuff for a living.

I had 13 medium to large sized trees removed from my yard this past summer. The stump grinder I hired took care of the job in a little more than half a day. He charged me on average about $45.00 per stump. I was responsible for chip removal and that's not as simple as you might think. The shavings get all intertwined and it takes some doing to separate it in order to be able to shovel the crap.

So Morgans never called me back, but Bubba just left and gave me a quote of $500 for 23 stumps. Seems like a good deal to me, but this is my first quote. What says the OB?

Sounds reasonable. Is he going to dispose of the chips or is that on you?

I say if you have someone that will grind 20 stumps fro $500, you'd better get it done before he changes his mind....grinding 20 stumps with a rental machine would make a grown man cry....
