After fiery criticism, Chipotle Mexican Grill has released a statement about a "spontaneous, unplanned action" in which an employee raised his hands in a "hands up, don't shoot" protest when nine New York police officers entered a Brooklyn location of the popular burrito chain.

In the statement, Chipotle co-CEOs Steve Ells and Monty Moran apologized to the officers involved in the incident, as well as "many of the people who have contacted us regarding the issue."

News of the employee's actions went viral Dec. 17 when Ray Melendez, a man who claims on Facebook to be a former NYPD officer, wrote a post that "an officer involved at the incident" told him that "several" employees "raised their hands and said 'hands up, don't shoot' to the officers," according to many news sources including The Guardian.

The post is now deleted.

The Chipotle statement details that the company has reviewed the incident, which occurred Dec. 16 close to 6:15 p.m., "including interview with the crew and a review of video footage from security cameras."

The review gleaned that the action "was not a coordinated effort by the staff" and that the officers were not refused service — "but instead chose to leave after encountering this gesture while still waiting in line."

According to food blog Eater, Chipotle originally posted an apology on its Facebook page, which elicited several angry comments.

While the post is no longer public, several patrons have expressed their outrage in the "reviews" section of Facebook, which received an influx of one-star reviews after the incident became public:

"I would never eat and or promote a business that promotes and or excepts hate. Allowing your employees to say such disrespectful comments to an Police Officer and not apologizing says you agree with such bigotry. SHAME ON YOU," Trisha Lee wrote in her review Sunday.

"The corporate apology to the public and the NYPD regarding the incident involving one of your employees and 9 officers just isn't good enough. I will never eat at Chipotle again... It isn't the same quality as circa 2005 any way," wrote Ambre Dun in a review Monday.

How did this become a news story? The cops complain about their treatment or something?

Why do people ask questions that are explicitly answered in the link?

Because I'm lazy. Duh. But thanks for clearing that up.

So a pussy got his panties in a twist and took to facebook? "Incident." Probably the same kind of guy that would say, "Not all cops are bad?"

it looks to me like a case of a customer complaining, just like they would with any business. The customers in this case just happen to be cops.

They left and took their business elsewhere and apparently wanted corporate to know why.

Last thing I want to order for lunch are false narratives laced with pseudo political bullshite thrown on my plate. Just STFU, make my lunch with a smile, and take my money.

funny how some people don't want to be stereotyped and lumped together yet they do the exact thing they protest.

Oh, the employees in question must go--they would never work again for my business, nor would I hire them if they applied. I would say the same thing if some other group was insulted by the actions of those employees. When you are in business or work for a business you set aside your political leanings and treat all customers with respect. This action was grossly disrespectful to the officers and warrants immediate firing.

Anyone who is placated by such an unnecessary apology should kill himself.

I agree.

I used to work for a company that had a company policy that you were not to put political, sports team, or any other kind of sticker or license plate on any company vehicle assigned to you. My understanding is that the policy stemmed from losing a large account in Texas where our sales rep was a Texas A&M fan that had a bunch of Aggie stickers on his company car and it pissed off our customer that was a huge Longhorns fan. It sounds stupid and childish, but this situation escalated into the company losing a million dollar per year account.

Free speech is good, right?

Except when it doesn't suit you?

Kind of pathetic.

Bingo. Free speech with financial implications is especially bad......WHEN YOU DON'T AGREE WITH IT.
