I'm looking for a good WiFi booster/extender. I live in the French Quarter and we use WiFi from the restaurant downstairs (the landlord gave us the password, we aren't stealing it). We get good reception in some rooms, but it is lacking in the living room where I really need it, as I just got Amazon fire TV.

Do WiFi extenders actually work? And if anybody has experience with a good decently priced one (<$50) I'd appreciate any recommendations.

Not really.
It would be better to buy a kickass router and give it to the restaurant owner to set up as his own. This would give you the best chance at a higher signal with higher bandwith

I apologize in advance for the noise we are going to make over the next couple of days.

I had to get a Wifi booster for my house. I was having trouble with streaming in my bedroom, the farthest room from the router. I went to Best Buy and was recommended the Powerline 500 by Netgear. It works great. The only problem I see is that it consists of two separate devices. One connects via Ethernet cable to the router and is plugged in to an outlet while the other is plugged into an outlet where you need the Wifi boosted. You would have to talk with the restaurant owner about hooking up the device to their router

For powerline to work, you would also need to make sure your power goes back to the same panel (and preferably same leg)

With a powerline setup (that is working properly), you can plug in a second router to your side and create you own network. This would give you much better results than a repeater

No apology needed, noise doesn't bother us, just don't piss on my doorstep and we're all good

Yeah I wouldn't want to do all that.

I saw a couple of Netgear one's where all you have to do to set it up is plug it into the wall in the same room as the router, then you can move it to any room you want. That I could definitely do when the restaurant is closed. But I wonder how reliable they are.

That may be the answer for your situation. Geeksquad guy at BB said those units were alright but for better streaming results the one I ended up with was better. I think the difference in price was $30-$40 so I went with the slightly more expensive one for hopefully better performance.

I bought one a few months ago to extend over a yard and it worked as advertised. I used it mainly to stream WatchESPN from my phone to a TV. The speed is supposed to suffer with the extenders but it streamed with no issue

Yeah the thing is, I only need a liiiiittle boost to have better streaming. I'm currently using my Fire Tv (watching the LSU game as we speak), but every now and then it will lag a bit. It's easily watchable, but I'll pay $40-$50 for better streaming. I don't think I need a powerful one.

The extenders will cut the bandwidth basically in half, but they will def increase coverage area. I would try to put it where you still have a full signal. (Approx halfway between the router and your living area usually works well).

do you have a pc that stays on all the time that gets good wifi reception from the restaurant?

if so you can share your wifi connection to the ethernet port, then setup a wireless router to grab a wan address from the pc ethernet port.

just need to have a pc that is on all the time.

I have this one: LINK

My cable modem/WiFi router is located in an add-on portion of my house, which means it's on the other side of brick.. very limited coverage outside of the room.

I put this one just on the other side of the wall to push out signal to the entire house. Works like a charm.

Yes. They do work. I have this one in my house. LINK
I think the technical term is a wireless repeater.

The issue you are going to have is when you try to pair it with the router. Some models require you to press something on the main router to make sure the repeater is paired with the correct router. I'm not sure if you have access to the restaurant's router.
