Guitar Suggestions

Alright I only played a guitar about a few times in my life, but I want to start learning how to play it now. I was going to ask you guys what guitar I want to purchase one that isn't extremely expensive. Something up to $100-200 and still plays pretty well. I'm also considering buying an amplifier too. Which guitar would you suggest a beginning guitar player like me should get?

for that price rage i would go with an acoustic takamine jasmine.

You can buy a few basic acoustics for 200-250 by Fender and Yamaha. They are inexpensive and have a good sound. Go to the Guitar Center near you. They always have beginner bundles this time of year.

A Gibson Dove or Hummingbird make good beginner guitars.

Get a Fender. They sound good for the price.

Get the Squier strat pack. It comes with everything you need.

go to Rondo music.com and get one of their Les Paul clones. They sound pretty incredible for the price out the box, and with a little tweaking, they'll sound better than many guitars double and triple the price.

If you find one of these in the $100-$200 range, let me know....I'll buy every one you can get your hands on.
In your price range, you should be looking at a used guitar on ebay or pawn shop.
ETA: I've been playing for a long time and always get the question of what to buy when just starting out playing. I give the same advice every time: Spend as much as you can reasonably afford. The better guitars are easier to play.
They almost always have:
1. Truss rods in the neck, which allows for a thinner neck.
2. Better bridge setup, which allows the strings to be closer to the fretboard, and
3. Better tuners, which help keep the guitar in tune.
If you could afford around $400.00, you can pick up a Pre Fender Guild acoustic; you'll have a quality guitar that you'll always be able to get your money out of...if you decide to sell.

Go up to $300 and get a used Taylor low end like a 110. They sound better than cheaper guitars, which will motivate you to keep practicing and playing. I still have my 110 and it's one of my favorite guitars.

Good suggestion. Review your choices with a friend who plays; that way you can avoid the obvious bad choices. I bought a nice Larrivee off CL a couple years ago; there are nice deals out there if you know what to look for.

every year there are people that buy guitars in december or january and regret the decision a couple of weeks later and want to sell the guitar that just sits in their living room.

The 110 was a great guitar at a great price. Since Taylor has moved the 110 and Babies to Mexico, it just isn't the same instrument. If you can a U.S. made 110, good choice.
The older Japanese guitars (circa 1980 to 1985) like Yamaha and Ibanez are really nice for the money. In fact, the old Yamaha ES335 Artist Series knockoffs are better than the Gibson of that era.

I've got a strat, two teles, a prs se, and a les paul. you can't go wrong with a squier classic 50s telecaster. it is a badass guitar! it's less than $400 brand new. used would fit your range.

Ebay - Squier Standard Strat - $99
Ebay - Marshall MG10C - $65
Then go to guitar center and get your cable, picks, tuner, strings, etc.

For beginners I always recommend the Yamaha FG series. No better value for the money in entry level guitars.

never cared for yamaha guitars.
he didnt mention wanting an acoustic or electric from what i'm seeing
a lot of people say to start off playing acoustic, but you don't really have to. getting some pedals and a small practice amp might be a lot more fun for him

My first guitar was a Yamaha FG-401. It's not something I'd play at a gig today, but for what it was, a well built, good value instrument for a beginner or intermittent player, it excelled.
