Yup, it's so terrible. Pretty funny defense that "they are students first" so tuition plus board and food stipends is adequate pay. Universities don't even treat them like students. A student on an academic scholarship, as far as I'm aware, is still able to work a job or accept money for their services. I've heard of students even having their own business.

These athletes are banned by the NCAA from accepting any additional money or even working other jobs (at least according to my buddy who played at OSU). So yeah frick the NCAA

So other players are allowed to work other jobs? Well, that's good.

But still, realistically they don't have enough time to do that with football and school

I've heard about athletes having outside jobs but I just find it ridiculous that these guys are restricted from making any money from their own name because they play a collegiate sport. Even if they don't sign anything that has any affiliation with the university they get punished. How many other businesses would punish their workers for going out and signing a blank piece of paper and making money from it?

They get paid once a semester through their federal pell grant. It's really easy to get one and it pays 1-2k each semester. Lots of that goes straight to tatoos, iPads, and headphones.

Bingo! the racist federal program left over from the 1960's.

Exactly why the poor starving college athlete thing is overblown.

Whether they're poor or not is irrelevant. It's not hard to understand.

College football is basically a professional sport. Someone is making a killing off of it, but not the players.

Please stop contributing to the stupidity surrounding this topic.

lol if it offends you that much, watch "pro" ball like the Canadian or Arena League...

i don't see too many incoming HS recruits bitching about not being paid and/or threatening to hold out

The best part about this discussion is the double standard.

Some of the same people who complain about the government re-distributing money are completely okay with the NCAA and the universities re-distributing money those players earned to other sports and others areas of the university.

I guess it's okay as long as you're not the one losing out right?

Hypocrites.

Is it even that high? Most NFL players do not make a whole lot of money when you consider how short their careers are. The median salary is $770,000, but the average career length is - if you can believe it, 3.3 years. So if you consider an average career length in most jobs is maybe 30-40 years - you'd only need to pull in 77k a year in an average career to meet the lifetime earnings of an NFL player. That's not poverty, but it aint wealthy either.

Huh? So you're saying the players should get ALL the income from games? That's a bit extreme to the other side.

They should receive compensation from the school similar to what a graduate assistant might receive, IMO. Enough to live on. However, I also think they should be allowed to sell their image while still in college, so the better athletes could pull in quite a bit more that way.

If you made 770k for the first 3 years of your career then got fired and got a super shitty job for the next 37 years making only 40k you would still come out averaging almost 100k over your your entire combined career

Not to shabby
