Book was solid but elevated to elite status by virtue of the Oprah crowd who gravitated to it. Movie was better, IMO.

Gone with the Wind

You have no idea. The movie was a pretty incredible adaptation of the book, and they pretty much nailed the casting which really helped, but the novel is 20x better than the movie, mainly because the characters are fleshed out so well. One of the better scenes in the book- Scarlett and Rhett on the porch during Sherman's Siege didn't even make the movie. Also, one gets a far better appreciation for the connection between Scarlett and Melanie, which is as much a central relationship of the story as Scarlett and Rhett.

One does have to grimace through a whole lot of New South retelling of how African Americans could be happy as slaves, though, but still the novel is far better than the book. I would also like to submit that 75 years later, it is still the best/most complete role for a female in Hollywood history by far, which is a little depressing.

I would submit Jack Reacher. I read the book after seeing the movie, and I have to say as entertaining as that series is, I liked what they did with the movie even more.

I'll say this:

I like economy and efficiency in art. If you can get the same effect on film in a fraction of the time that it takes to read a book, even if the effect is equal, it just takes more skill.

In that respect:

The Godfather
The Shining

It isn't that they are better, but they do a phenomenal job of boiling down tons of prose into more economical chunks. They aren't necessarily "better," but they are equal, and THAT makes them better in this kind of discussion. If that makes sense.

A Clockwork Orange...I like both for different reasons, so it's tough to say one is better than the other. Same goes for Fight Club.

The Mist flat out better. The end makes the journey worth it.

The book was more exciting for me because you had to adapt to their language and culture to understand what's going on.

Difficult book to read, but worth it, every fifth word or so is a linguistic trick of Burgess, if I were better at picking up foreign languages I would have enjoyed it more, but I agree, you really don't get the full experience without reading the book.

I actually came to this board just now to see if this thread had ever been done because I just finished watching Gone Girl. And the book was much better than the movie, as expected.

The Godfather book is a pulpy piece of shite. I mean, it's a good fun pulpy piece of shite, but a piece of shite nonetheless. The movie is one of the greatest ever made.

Just about every Hitchcock film is based on a book. Almost every single one of his films are superior to the source.

No Country for Old Men and Fight Club are both great books by great authors. I think the movies are better.

The key to a great adaptation is recognizing film is a different medium. Merely rehashing the book is not going to be effective. You have to build off the book and make it your own. Like Kubrick did with The Shining. Or you critique the books myriad flaws like Starship Troopers.

Hated the Forrest Gump film. Loved the book. Film sucks compared to the book.

Preferred Clockwork Orange film to the book, but enjoyed both.

not really bad, but just geared toward Teens and young adults, they also got kind of far fetched, especially Mockingjay. The story is interesting to me, but the books were hard to get through

Came to post this. I really didn't enjoy the book all that much. I didn't read it until I was an adult, and I quickly realized it is a kids book.
