We probably don't need it, but the damned "Best Moment in History" thread got me reminiscing on some old good times.

Wow, the bitter assholes crawled out of their holes tonight.

The defense works fairly well as is, but the transition game is sloppy and I wish they didn't have so many huge gaps in the schedule where they go cold and lose a lot of the momentum they've gained. They have no patience or caution in the passing game, especially in transition.

also, the defensive rebounding has been horrible at times. No change in defensive style will improve the need for more disciplined fundamentals in that area. It's been that way for a couple of years, actually, and has become a hallmark deficiency of Jones' defenses.

We've struggled with a 2-3 zone, not sure we could pull off the freak.

Its been a lot of years so if I am wrong refresh my memory. Wasn't the freak just showing a different look every time down the floor and also changing based of if LSU made or missed the previous shot? The opponent could never really get a good feel for what LSU would do.

I don't remember the specifics either, I do remember the TV announcers talking about it all the time.

some of that, dale would throw everything at a opponent depending on the talent on his team

he'd go man, box and one, 2-3, diamond and one etc...sometimes all in the same possession

loved those times, special to me

:nb4whatdidhewin:

ETA: and I don't think this team could really pull it off nor should they have to.

Totally agree... Was being a little silly with the op.

I remember freak being a lot of triangle&2, box&1 and man to man that changed a lot.

Like a lot of what dale did, he coached to get inside ones head. Both his players and his opponents.

When it worked, it was fabulous. The 86 final four and the bobby knight incidents come to mind.

agree 100%. It wasn't about the defense actually, it was about confusing the opponent and getting THEM off their game.

86 was one of my favorite three weeks of being a tiger fan, what a run

I think it also depended on the location of the first pass and/or position of the ball when it passed midcourt and I would love to see it, but I'm not sure of its true utility, but sounds awesome.

Are implying that this isn't smart enough? I hope that's joke because them teams of Dale's weren't exactly scholars.

Totally disagree with this. I don't care how talented you are the more you can throw at a opponent the better.

I know you or anyone here say this but it reminds how people used to talk about what underdogs that 1986 team was. That team was seeded 11th because of crazy situations and the chicken pox outbreak. That team was loaded with talent and that is almost always overlooked.

Tex Winter was on staff. Had a lot to do with the success of the freak.

This....CJJ needs to get the kids to execute the fundamental things that they can, and it's been a struggle for him to get that on the defensive end of the floor.

Not sure where the disconnect is, but there have been signs here and there this year of progress, but still inconsistent on that end of the floor in that aspect.

Yes. Played a version of it in HS for a few games. It was largely dependent upon the location of the entry pass from the PG. There were other keys that could be changed, but it was generally based on the entry pass.
