Revis, who has been well known as a "me first" type player is saying things like this.

quote:

"We got team goals that we want to accomplish, and the Pro Bowl is definitely not one of them," Revis said. "I think a bunch of guys got in -- Tom [Brady], Rob [Gronkowski], [Matthew] Slate [Slater], Steve [Gostkowski].

"We all appreciate getting honored, but at the same time, collectively as a whole group, as a team, we can just throw that under the bus, because we're focused more on the team."

and

quote:

"You know, it's an honor to be on a list of great, talented guys, some of the greatest players in the game," Revis said. "It is. It shows you -- especially coming from the ACL [injury] -- but it just shows the important work you put in, and I just have to thank my teammates for making my job a little bit easier.

"It all works together, the pass rush, the schemes that we do that the coaches draw up. I thank the coaches, as well, and my teammates for making my job easier."

I really hope we sign him long term.

the pats are just an example of how stability and a successful culture matter in the NFL. it's why harbaugh is in trouble with all of his success (players won't buy in) and teams that keeps firing coaches keep being shitty (no stability).

their style of getting formerly "me-first" guys who have done all their individual shite early in the career on the cheap is great, but they can only pull it off by having that locker room and that culture in place.

One of my good friends is a huge bills fan and for the last few years, we've made friendly wagers on saints vs bills. He finally won.

SCREW YOU GUYS.

I agree with that. I think that attitude was passed down from Teddy and Vrable to Brady, Wilfork, and Mayo. Robert Kraft has a lot to do with it too, I recently watched a video where Kraft was being interviewed by Bruschi and out of no where he just started talking about how Teddy meant so much to the Patriot nation, and Bruschi started tearing up.

and they will cut the frick out of you if you don't buy in, like big john sullivan

aquib talib is a bigger reclamation project than revis island, imho. that dude was an a-hole before the pats

He was still an a-hole with the pats but it brought an attitude to the Pats defense that they hadn't had in a very long time so it was mutually beneficial. I think Bill let Aqib be himself out in the open moreso than most, in the same vein in him looking the other way about Gronks demeanor

From a business perspective, they'll cut you even faster. Everyone remembers Lawyer Milloy trying to renegotiate his contract and they cut him. This was the defensive co-captain from their Superbowl run.

Kraft over the years has only paid large contracts to three players.

1) Brady - franchise QB, no explanation needed
2) Wilfork - A 350-400lb NT with cat-like quickness that takes up 2-3 guys every play. The most important single position for the 3-4 defense
4) Gronkowski - when healthy, the hardest defensive match-up in the NFL not named Calvin Johnson

As long as you have #1/#2, you have a chance to have an effective offense and defense.

Logan Mankins, Adalius Thomas, Revis as well off the top of my head

Pats don't really play a true 3-4 anymore. They've been base 4-3 for a couple years now although they still have the flexibility to go 3-4 a lot during a game

to be fair, i'm pretty sure they still line wilfork up like a NT to allow more gaps for the other DL

the best D in NFL history had 2 wilforks at DT

He lines up shaded to the center more time than a true nose. Before his achillies injury they were even splitting him out at Defensive end for their 3-4 packages

Revis' contract was still 1-year with another year option, and I wouldn't consider Thomas' contract "large" when comparing to the others.

Good call on Mankins, his contract is only a a few million under Gronk's.

Although it's not a true 3-4 it still relies heavily on the NT eating up the inside of the LOS. You can make arguments either way that it resembles a 3-4/4-3 more than the other, but the importance of the NT is still static.

But they don't use a NT most of the time, is what I'm saying

He's been playing a traditional defensive tackle position for a couple years now

It's semantics, but I have nothing better to do but to argue those

They switch back and forth between the 3-4 and 4-3. They even play some 50 defense occasionally.

I know this. I've said this

The base is 4-3 though. And they play nickel more often than not (but that's just a byproduct of today's passing league)

I just think people have a poor picture of what Wilfork actually does and how the Pats defense plays

I know what you're saying, a shaded nose isn't a true NT, nor is it a 3 technique either (although he's so damn big you could say he's lined up as a shaded nose and 3 tech at the same time).

Technically, I know what you're saying but from a strategic perspective his role is still the same. Eat up a bunch of guys with your large body, quick feat, and nasty temperament. Not exactly the same role asked of a 4-3 DT.

Okay, Gronk is the best TE in the NFL no question about it

ETA damn no takers anymore? Last year that would've caused a riot. How much difference a yearakes
