The sub2hr project is the first dedicated international research initiative made up of specialist multidisciplinary scientists from academia, elite athletes and strategic industry partners (e.g. Global Sports Communication, Nijmegen, The Netherlands); all partners have at least 10 years of experience working in elite sport (including breaking marathon world records) and the participating scientists are opinion leaders in their respective fields.

Professor Yannis Pitsiladis, who leads the sub2hr project, was the founding member of the International Centre for East African Running Science (ICEARS) set up over a decade ago to investigate the determinants of the phenomenal success of east African distance runners in international athletics.
Project aims

The sub2hr project, as initially conceived, will comprise three main project phases:

a development phase (first 12 months) will involve setting up the global consortium, advertising the ambitious objectives and securing the necessary sponsorship to initiate the project;
an implementation phase (years 2-5) aimed at establishing the project and achieving the 1:59:59 objective
a legacy phase (e.g. to serve as a model for future sporting success).

No fricking way that's possible without drugs, and even then I don't see it happening. The human body is only capable of so much.

2:02:57 is the current record. I bet someone can pull it off.

Definitely not a runner. What's the record now for a marathon?

Yeah, running sub-2 hrs means finishing 3/4 mile ahead of the guy that runs a 2:03. With a flat course, no wind and mid-50s temp...plus a lot of drugs...maybe it's possible.

I can see it happening. The record right now is 2:02:57 by Dennis Kimetto of Kenya. If I remember right I think he was on sub 2 hr pace through the first half of the race. Thats not all that far off.

Not possible even with a massive, sophisticated doping program. I wouldn't be surprised if nobody breaks 2:03 again for a long time. Berlin is the only race where those times are possible and conditions were ideal this year.

Indoor marathon could possibly make it closer to 1:59:59~

Man, when you see these guys go though. It looks so effortless.

A sub 2:00:00 marathon will happen, but I doubt it happens within five years. The record will also be set at the Berlin Marathon. It is the fastest major course that is recognized by the IAAF.

The world has improved two minutes since 2003 and one minute since 2008. I guess anything can happen, but I do not think the record will be broken for at least 15-20 years.
