The Interview being available On Demand and in theaters got me thinking: people like watching movies when they want, at home. Will movie theaters ever be completely done away with in exchange for watching new releases at home whenever you want?

I'm not saying it will happen tomorrow, but in a few years I can see studios offering the option of paying $12 to watch a movie at a theater, or pay a little more and stream it and watch at home. Thoughts?

Not until having a 50 ft screen, digital projector, and high end stereo surround sound speakers in your house is commonplace.

There will always be an audience that enjoys a shared experiencs in a large space with a big screen and great sound. Can't really be duplicated at home.

Chain theaters? Sure. But, indepedent theaters in big cities that play indies, foreign arthouse, retrospectives, etc? I hope not.

Yep. I don't go to see a movie in theaters because of access. I go for the experience. If I didn't care about the experience then I would have no problem with waiting for all the movies to be released for home viewing.

Although fewer of them, chains (including those that exclusively show independent and art house films, e.g., Landmark Theaters) are still making money because of an economy of scale and multiple screens. They've adapted, although, sure, there will be ups and downs.

As far as independently owned theaters are concerned, the Prytania in New Orleans is finding a way to survive. And, in fact, there are at least two new independent movie theaters scheduled to open in New Orleans within the next year.

No, but our current perspective and experience of them will be.

No. More small full service theaters that serve booze and restaurant quality food will keep going.

More indy theaters where arthouse films can debut will pop up.

Art will always need a public format.

Going out to the movies is a common date for couples. Since we are wired to pair off, movies theaters will always exist.

The Multiplex might not be so prevalent, but who knows.

ETA: Just realized once McD's and YUM! get into the theater business the world will end.

I would love to open a something of this nature. A small capacity (maybe 50 people) theater with a cash bar. Charge more at the door but have really comfortable chairs and maybe even do a intermission in the middle of the movie for 5 minutes for people to grab another beer or use the bathroom. Not sure if there would be a market for it but I would love to have it. Maybe even just do 1 or 2 movies a night on 1 screen and rotate the movies during the week.

Recently went to Canal Place and it was overall pretty good. The theatre held maybe 25 people and served food and drinks. Little pricey though, $80 for the movie, 2 drinks and a tiny pizza. The pizza was like $16 and one notch above a Tony's frozen pizza. I would probably skip the food next time and just drink.

Some of the smaller theaters here have found their niche showing foreign films, Sundance type films, etc. Then doing re-releases of classics on the weekends. And they stay really busy as a result.

There will always be something to going and seeing a movie at a theater.

my other dream would be to buy about 20 acres and open a driving range with a really nice bar at it. Just to have something to keep me occupied and basically support itself.
