I have some homebrew sours in the car, but my girlfriend's family aren't exactly mavens.

Most lambics in traditional Belgium breweries are stored on their side for both serving and long-term aging. Thus, the sediment will adhere and collect on the bottom side. Using the lambic basket, you can keep the bottle at a slight angle and gently pour it to minimize agitation of the sediment and maximize how many clear ounces of lambic can be had from the bottle. It should help create more uniformity when sharing the bottle among friends. I've seen where the first and last pour, using typical upright pouring, look and taste significantly different.
So, there is a functional purpose. But more importantly, they just look classy as frick. Although, I do store all my lambics on their side in a wine cooler and will attempt to serve them traditionally.
