....in terms of basketball talent in the NBA in the United States at one time.

Obviously not an Olympic year, but in terms of All-Time greats, 1969 was the cross roads as the last professional season of Bill Russell (Magic and Bird were past their prime in 92 too) and the rookie year of Lew Alcindor, aka Kareem Abdul-Jabar.

Ready to challenge 1992's 12 man team, we have the following in the talent pool for Team USA...

Bill Russell
Wilt Chamberlain
Jerry West
Oscar Robertson
Kareem Abdul-Jabar
Elgin Baylor
Jerry Lucas
Billy Cunningham
Willis Reed
Jerry Sloan
John Havlicek
Nate Thurmond
Elvin Hayes
Wes Unsled
Gail Goodrich

(am I forgetting anyone?)

As a kicker, the NCAA representative (aka, the Laettner of the team), would easily be Pistol Pete Maravich of LSU.

Starting front court would be Wilt and Russell with Kareem coming in off the bench

So Oscar would have to run the point? Who else would play there?

You could do a hell of a lot worse than having Big O as your pg. He was a matchup nightmare.

Why not just go 1968 since it was an actual Olympic year?

West and Maravich could play point or shooting guard.

Only year you could include those two which give this team a chance in terms of prestige vs 1992.

This team is frontcourt-loaded. Russell wouldn't get very many minutes. Rick Barry should be on this team somewhere. Maybe Lenny Wilkins or Earl Monroe, too.

The Winter Olympics probably threw you off. It used to be that both Olympics were in leap years. They decided to offset them, so they had Winter Olympics in 1992 and then again in 1994, so now the Summer Games are in leap years and the Winter Games are in the off years.

The Olympics became such a money haul that the IOC realized soon stations wouldn't be able to go much higher twice a year, so they spaced it out. Pretty smart and now we get bombarded by Olympics every two years.
