IMHO, get a single pump nitro piston Benjamin trail Hunter XL in .22. It will come with a decent scope. The rifle will be heavy but, once dialed it, game has no chance.

but how are these crack-barrelled guns powered?

I see it says gas piston. Like a CO2?

ETA: one thing to keep in mind with fps ratings. Just about every manufacturer gets those ratings using alloy pellets with no restrictions. Once you stick a lead pellet in there it drops pretty drastically. The Hatsan 125 that I posted on the previous page got its rating using lead pellets. So far from what I've found, it has the highest fps rating with lead for a gas piston air rifle. But you will pay for it.
