I'll always favor the American classic, business-like look. Thinner ties don't necessarily contradict that, but you have to be pretty selective.

Huh? I see plenty of people at my office, old and young, wearing brown with navy.

Yuck. I am traditional. Brown shoes with brown only. I see people in Ny dressed like nerds and laugh.

Dark brown and cordovan with navy is classic as it comes. Wearing walnut with navy isn't a faux pas either, but I wouldn't do it for a court appearance.

I wear a suit a good amount and I care about belts and shoes, and I have a single pair of black dress shoes, if that tells you anything. I only wear black leather if I absolutely have to.

i only wear brown shoes with my navy suits. i just don't like black shoes. i also prefer navy suits a bit lighter than the classic midnight navy (which tends to be mistaken for black). my navy suits have brown buttons on them. i wear brown shoes with lighter gray suits as well (but not charcoal).

as i said earlier, you gotta keep your look relative to your situation. skinnier guys can wear skinny ties and jackets with narrower lapels. obviously this also works better for younger men. older and wider men should wear more conservative attire, as it just looks better. a linebacker doesn't look right in a skinny tie. however, if you think that's your look and have the stones to rock it, i'm not gonna hate

I also agree dark Brown and cordovan shoes are solid business classics with Navy and light blue suits. And I have been in the business Finance and investing arena for 22 years.
More important than shoe and belt color is to have clean and shined shoes, always. Freshly pressed shirts, clean grooming and just the look of someone who takes pride in the way they present themselves are all that most serious business folks care about. We leave the rest for the pretenders.

Skinny ties should be banned. They look like shite. If I walked in and saw my lawyer wearing a skinny tie I would fire him on the spot

You wouldn't fire me, brah. I look amazing in my suits.

No kidding.

I rock skinny ties because they look good on me. If you have a slender look, they look better than broad ties and suits that push out too much.

This is true. Slim ties are what I buy, or that's what they say on the tag.

Since when did brown shoes with a Navy suit become a terrible idea?

I have no freaking idea. If he's wearing navy suits with black shoes, then I don't know what to tell him.

And, navy with black works so long as it's a particular kind of navy.
