Pope Francis Blasts Vatican's Bureaucrats In Blistering Critique

Pope Francis blasted the Vatican's top bureaucrats at an annual Christmas gathering, accusing the cardinals, bishops and priests who make up the Curia of "spiritual Alzheimer's" and of lusting for power at all costs.
"Sometimes, [officials of the Curia] feel themselves lords of the manor — superior to everyone and everything," Francis told the Curia's assembled members, according to Vatican Radio, which carried a report of the meeting titled "Pope Francis: Christmas greetings to Curia."
The Curia, the administrative body of the Roman Catholic Church, is dominated by Italians who oversee the world's 1.2 billion Catholics. Francis, an Argentine, is the first non-European to hold the papacy in more than a millennium. The former Cardinal had not worked in the Curia before his election; he has made reform of the Vatican a major part of his agenda.
"The Curia needs to change, to improve. ... A Curia that does not criticize itself, that does not bring itself up to date, that does not try to improve, is a sick body," he said.
Joshua McElwee of the National Catholic Reporter writes that the "pope's list of diseases may show just how in need of reform the Vatican is."
John Allen, who covers the Vatican for the Boston Globe's Crux, notes that Francis "has not shied from complaining about the gossiping, careerism, and bureaucratic power intrigues that afflict the Holy See. But as his reform agenda has gathered steam, he seemed even more emboldened to highlight what ails the institution."
The pope listed 15 "ailments" that afflict the Curia, including "spiritual Alzheimer's," being boastful and the "terrorism of gossip."
The Associated Press notes that Francis' speech was met with tepid applause, and "few were smiling as the Pope listed one-by-one the 15 'Ailments of the Curia' that he had drawn up, complete with footnotes and Biblical references."
Here is an official list of the 15 ailments cited by Francis. The Associated Press provides the English translation here.

If I were the Pope I think I'd hire a food taster.

I am sure he just ascended to the throne like a Biblical miracle, no lust for power or anything like that. I am sure he had to be begged every step of the way as he climbed the ladder.

10) Glorifying one's bosses. "It's the sickness of those who court their superiors, hoping for their benevolence. They are victims of careerism and opportunism, they honor people who aren't God."
Sounds like he doesn't like arse kissers. Good for him.

There is some truth in this. This Pope is trying real hard to alienate the shite out of a lot of people both inside, and outside, the Vatican (his interference in Cuba, for example).

I do like him for the fact that he says shite on his mind. It has been a long time since someone has been so scathing of the Church.
Wonder how long he will continue with it.

He wasn't a member of the Curia before becoming Pope. He's about as much of an outsider as you can be.

Most likely correct. I need to research more about his past.

He'll end up being one of the most popular Popes in history.

Outside the Vatican...inside, not so much

I love this Pope so much. Really, really proud of my Church.

Being a Catholic, I think to compare it to a political situation... it is like someone moving from the governor's mansion to the white house, and then blasting the corruption and foolishness on Capital Hill.
As opposed to someone spending years and years in DC, either in appointed office, or in Congress, and then becoming President.
It's hard to claim Francis is a true outsider - he is a cardinal after all, and by all accounts he finished second in the polling when Benedict was elected. And while he was an archbishop, it wasn't like he was a parish priest for a few decades. He wasn't part of the Curia, but he was a higher up in the Jesuits. Being a Jesuit, his career was focused mainly on teaching and helping the poor, not leading a parish.
I think the big reason we are seeing what we are seeing is his Jesuit background. The Jesuits take a vow of poverty, and the insane amount of money in the Vatican is a direct opposition to what he has believed his whole life.

According to this guy, Francis was a supporter of the military dictatorship in Argentina and was complicit in the torture and assassination of influential progressive members of Argentina society. He is a Pro US pope that perhaps was installed by the CIA or US State Department to help negate the rising tide of left wing ideologies, socialism, and communism throughout Central America.

Of course, others claim his silence was necessary to save more lives.
Critics of Francis say that is historical revisionism and is being spread to not damage the reputation of the new Pope.
The more you know.

You could take those 15 items and describe every elected political body on the planet (well, maybe not #2, I doubt Congress really works that hard)
