Best way to install a SSD for the non computer guru?

I have a Samsung Evo on its way to my house. Wondering how to get that puppy installed. I am not comfortable with taking apart my laptop as I am not computer savvy at all. Does anyone on here within 30 minutes of Mandeville do these kinds of installs for fun? I can pay in beer or dollars

Plenty of modern laptops are going to be extremely easy to make this install with. Like, unscrew 4 screws to remove the bottom piece of your laptop, pull the cord out of the original hard drive, place in SSD, attach the same cord. You'll be fine doing it yourself.

Its a Lenovo Y40...I have no idea how to tell if it will be hard just by looking at a step by step process. Haven't even been able to find a good step by step with pictures

Should be exactly the same as this:

You need to use software to replicate what's on the original hard drive (I believe that Samsung provides the software with the SSD). It's only a 7 minute video, check it out and see if it looks too overwhelming.

Software that comes with the Evo is super easy to use and actually really nice. You'll need some type of transfer cable since it's a laptop. I think a SATA to USB cable.

yea, you have to make a sata connection drive able to plug into usb.
unless he was talking about migrating to an existing HD, i just figured you could skip a step with an external.

Yep, that'll work.

So we have that 240gb crucial that I need to install in my sons desktop.
Any tips? He's got a 2tb HD now with his system and everything on it.
i7 alienware. Do I upgrade him to windows 8.1 or stick with 7?
Decisions decisions...

Disconnect all hard drives from system, and connect just the SSD. Enable AHCI in the BIOS if not already done. Install Windows of your choice to the SSD. I'd go with 8.1, which among other things, will discover it's on an SSD within a day or so and configure SuperFetch, ReadyBoot, defragger, etc appropriately; those things require manual attention in Windows 7. You might make a system image at this point. Reconnect the other drives, install your drivers, use Windows Update, do whatever customizations you like (I have like a 40 step list), and definitely make a system image at this point. I use Terabyte's Image for Windows, but I believe Macrium Reflect is free. Now install your programs and periodically make new system images. I keep two generations, typically making a new image before installing Patch Tuesday updates. (One of my configuration steps is to prevent Windows Update from automatically downloading updates.)
(The reason to disconnect secondary drives is to avoid the Windows Setup issue in which it enumerates the connected drives differently than the BIOS and even installed Windows, and also to keep it from derping itself by installing the boot files to a secondary drive. It's a PITA to do this, but it is highly recommended.)

If I am just cloning my current HD onto my new SSD, do I need to do all that stuff? I assumed I just need to transfer all of my current HD info to the new SSD, remove current HD, install SSD, turn on and I'm good to go

Nope. CAD's situation is different because he's adding an SSD to a desktop, doing a fresh Windows install, and keeping the existing HDD as storage.
