I had never even heard of this movie, but my brother just told me it was pretty badass with lots of violence. Can anybody confirm this?

Yes.
Not the most violent of movies, but the violence that is offered is of the crazy/stupid variety.
Tons o' fun.

I was surprise to find out it was the Training Day director, because it thought the movie was more Deja Vu in quality.

The Equalizer. Easily. The Equalizer is not Denzel's best movie, but it was very good nonetheless.

It's a simple action movie where the hero is invincible and the bad guys are hopeless. Could swap Denzel for Statham or Steven Seagal and you'd get the same thing. I was bored by it bc for some reason I expected more.

Its a good action flick with the right amount of violence.
Its not the high emotional impact drama of a Man on Fire but if you like Denzel kicking arse you will like it.

The Equalizer, as well as John Wick, were both surprisingly entertaining movies. Nothing special, but solid popcorn flicks.

Fair assessment.
Many movies lately have left me angry leaving the theater. This was not one, I was quite pleased with this film.
